Nelson Piquet Jnr crashes his Renault at the exit of turn 17 during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix.

The safety car was sent onto the track while Piquet’s car could be recovered. This played into the hands of team mate Fernando Alonso, who had started with a light fuel load and pitted earlier.

Alonso took the lead of the race while his rivals pitted during the safety car period and went on to win the Grand Prix.

However one year later, after he had been dropped by the team, Piquet revealed he had been ordered by Renault team principal Flavio Briatore and technical director Pat Symonds to crash his car deliberately to help Alonso win the race. Briatore and Symonds were dismissed from Renault.
