Last night I made my second appearance on Peter Windsor’s live online F1 chat show “The Flying Lap”.

You can watched the full one-and-a-quarter-hour show below including an interview with Red Bull’s Christian Horner and contributions from former F1 engineer Willem Toet and Todd McCandless of Formula 1 Blog.

Thanks to Peter for the opportunity to appear on his show again. Thanks also to everyone who sent in questions including, I noticed, F1 Fanatic reader DeadManWoking!

  1. Hope you managed to catch your train Keith ;)

It was a great show, seen a couple before including the one you were on before.

Christian Horner seems his typically relaxed self. I’d love to see Ross Brawn on there.

  2. Great show. What’s it take to get Peter to buy some books for his shelves? Lol!

  3. Interesting episode, and how could it not be with Willem Toet and Keith, also interesting to hear an american’s views.

  4. Did you enjoy you orange juice? :D

It’s great to watch that – an hour and a bit of F1 talk – it’s like a pre race F1 Forum on BBC!

  5. I’ve always got behind TFL since ep 1. What a great enterprise! A great way to avoid the mainstream media bottlenecks that we all have to deal with.

  6. Keith i find it hilarious you are staring at peter for ages.

  7. Haven’t watched it yet, but I’m hoping I’ll have enough time after work to watch it quick before FP1 which starts at 6:30 PM my time. I really enjoyed both Keith and Willemstad Toet on the earlier episodes, so I can’t wait to see this one.

    1. Really do, its well worth it (again). Love the idea of it and great work really.

  8. heh, franchitti and tracy were my answers as well

    1. Speaking of Franchitti, did you see Letterman last night? I missed it, but I guess Franchiti was on talking with him about Jim Clark. I’ll have to look it up.

  9. Cool video. You look different in this video to your photo at the bottom of the blog, Keith.

  10. After seeing you on there for the second time, all I can say is that if I’m ever on an F1 quiz show, I want you (and Karun C.) on my team! I’ve been enjoying TFL, as, until the USF1 phase, we Speed Channel folk were regularly treated to Peter Windsor’s pit walks and interviews. I’m glad to see him with a long format show, especially when he invites in our own Keith C!

Thanks Keith. I didn’t know my question had made it into the show! Unfortunately, I had to leave before the end and it wasn’t in the replay. :(

I’ve noticed the first thing Christian Horner says in every interview he has, is “Yeah no”. I wish he would make up his mind lol.

  13. Never heard of this before you mentioned it, but what a great programme and you seem in your element.

I look forward to more episodes :)

  14. First timeI’ve seen TFL. Thank you for the link. You did a grand job Keith, as did Willem and Todd. Some really good points touched on. Tyre wear and downforce were given particular focus and since KERS puts more energy through the rubber, does that put more pressure on ‘downforce kings’ Red Bull, who were harder on tyres than McLaren in pre-season and Melbourne testing?

Further food for thought in this area for the next episode must come from the exceptional performance by rookie Sergio Perez. Assuming that the minor wing infringement by Sauber didn’t turn the C30 into a magic carpet, have the teams misjudged the Pirelli tyres heat profile? 36 Laps on the option in the second half of the race looks like track temp may play a massive role in tyre profile – Albert Park track temp was low, but dropped off as the race went on and evening moved in.

If Pirelli wear is going to prove so track temp dependant, Sepang will underline this in two weeks time. Providing no monsoon, generally high track temps plus the DRS/KERS on the long straights could shake things up.

Another interesting pick from the show was Christian Horner’s obvious dislike of KERS. Personally agree, F1 should be about making it as sleek, slippery and fast as humanly. KERS destabilises when gathering then creates no benefit as everyone has it – no net gain, just overly complicates what should be the purest form of racing this side of a drag strip.

But why is Red Bull so wary? Red Bull didn’t run their KERS in Melbourne. Horner has since confirmed that it was unreliable during Friday testing and Newey may have been rather uncompromising with the design of this years car in that area. Do RB have cooling issues with KERS? Indeed, are they worried about higher tyre wear from KERS added to their high downforce?

Hope PW will be addressing some of these issues on Wednesday. Anyway, again, grand job KC and intelligent cast by PW.
