It’s like I’ve been in a coma and woken up in the middle of a completely different season.
This is MAD!!

FIA is madness. Hot blowing is ok for McLaren, but not cold blowing is not ok for RedBull. at this point might as well limit their rev to 500 lower than everyone else.

I’m disappointed Ferrari didn’t make it but it’s closest gap over the season. I think Alonso or Massa’s first victory of the season is quite likely! also 3 young guys did brilliant job!

Dont worry FIA will soon outlaw somethin else ferrari doesnt do well in order to allow them to catch up.

Wow. I can really see how the Renault-powered cars will be at a disadvantage running under the full OTBD ban. First and second on the grid? Why, they’re practically miles behind everyone else!
Yes, at this point, I’m pretty much running on undiluted sarcasm. But with this result in mind, I really do have to question the whole OTBD saga. People are saying that the FIA are being unfair with last-minute rule changes, but based on this session, I think people have to look a little mroe closely at the Renault teams. Because they’re still dominating qualifying without their concessions whilst the Mercedes-powered teams are struggling with them.
Maybe the FIA were wrong to fiddle with the rules while no-one was watching, but this result is a pretty strong case for Renault having played fast and loose with the rulebook … and if they hadn’t done it in the first place, the OTBD saga never would have happened.

FIA is ridiculous, mclaren had no changes to their engine, and rebull had to decrease their cold blowing to 10%, at least be consistent. this whole race is ridiculous.
Moo
9th July 2011, 17:55
Just to let you know, McLaren had to tweak their settings as well, since they also had a pretty good system. Limiting it to 10% probably hurt them a lot as well.
The arguments earlier were to do with how Mercedes engines could use their overrun.
BasCB (@bascb)
9th July 2011, 16:25
I can guess this will not make it easy for Horner and Renault to convince the others about letting them have back their advantage!
Quite another thing is how the FIA look for changing the interpretation of the rules 3 or 4 times during a GP meeting! That is surely one up for the statistics page later. And a deep in sports governance.
@HoHum (@hohum)
9th July 2011, 18:32
PM I must take exception to your suggestion that Renault played fast and loose with the rule book. Consider please that these engines use direct fuel injection just like a diesel engine and diesel engines have for a very long time used fuel flow rather than air flow to regulate their engine speed and power output so I think it only natural that a modern direct injection engine would follow suit. I know you think the Mercedes (Daimler) engine the best but I can see no other reason than extra exhaust flow for sending unburned fuel into the exhausts on the over-run, but I can now see that you are probably right about the Renault engine using less fuel than the Mercedes and think I now know why.

Get used to being last, Mr Ricciardo. Hope that F1 ride was worth it.. you’ll be spending more time avoiding the lead lap cars than actually racing anyone in front of you.
Todfod (@todfod)
9th July 2011, 15:02
Its his first race in f1, and he qualified 0.5s behind a much more experienced teammate who has been driving all season long.
Maybe you are pulling the judgement trigger a tad too early.
Marco
9th July 2011, 16:12
Liuzzi was pacewise nowhere near Sutil, so I don t think it is an outstanding result for Ricciardo, even if it is his first qualifying… It is a difference to drive a “rocket” in a test and a slow car in a qualifying…
Tom

People had no problem pulling the trigger early during FP when Ricciardo was ahead.

That’s a pretty misguided view. I can’t recall Karthikeyan being so close and seen as you can only be truly measured against your team mate, I reckon that’s a cracking start.
Tom
9th July 2011, 16:34
Given Karthikeyan his due, he was close in China, Spain, and Canada.
And, anyways, Karthikeyan was never expected to do anymore than finish races, unlike wonder boy.
@HoHum (@hohum)
9th July 2011, 18:37
I think it is probably a good idea for any new driver in a struggling team not to crash the car, in the circumstances a conservative time was to be expected, but time will tell.
BasCB (@bascb)
9th July 2011, 19:58
Yep, and it being in the rain he did wise to be carefull. Its not as if he had a real chance of ending up further than 23rd in the best of cases anyway.

Riduculous qualifyin session. Hot blowing is ok for mercedes, but cold blowing is not ok for renaul. FIA is ******* me off last couple of years. its ridiculous.

9th July 2011, 15:07
What was Lewis doing staying in for the better part of Q3?!? Maybe he’s taking preserving tyres for the race a tad too seriously. I expected more from him this quali session.
He also ruined my prediction for the weekend.. argh!

9th July 2011, 16:05
did he do a 2nd run? – i got called away mid way thru q3

Don’t think so, it rained lightly towards the end of the session.

He did get out, only it was getting wet again so he had no real chance of improvement anymore. Badly planned by the team.

9th July 2011, 16:16
good run for Maldonado! I did predict one of the Williams cars to be in Q3 – but I predicted the wrong one.
Would love to see how he does but the race is not shown live in the US. They took a couple of the best races of the calendar (Montreal, Silverstone) to tape delay.
Either way…. would like to see Maldonado… and perhaps DiResta break into the top 5!
@HoHum (@hohum)

So the start will go into turn 3 like this; In my opinion!
Webber
Alonso
Vettel
Button
Massa
Rosberg
Hamilton
Resta
etc
I doubt much difference, except for the fact that Hamilton has had terrible starts recently meaning he will probably have another, The only real advantage he has is that he does not have to wait as long as being at the front of the grid at the start! But besides that, everyone behined him has new tyres and most infront of him will block him! So the silverstone thrill may already have gone, I don’t see button doing very well from his track record!
