    1. Congraturations Mark! but Vettel is P2 with so-called serious gearbox problem……even though it would be much better than that Vettel win with the problem. I hope better year for Webber next year.

Button could have better result than this if he used option in 3rd stint. Alonso looked good but tyre problem of Ferrari is still on-going. Finally I like Massa’s doughnut but it’s shame 5th is the highest result for him this year.

      1. If the gearbox was so serious, the FIA should have called for Vettel to come off for safety reasons. I’m obviously no F1 driver, but I can’t see any of them being OK about being behind a gearbox that drops its load all over the track…

        1. I also assume it would not be worse than Hamilton’s still it affected him in bad ways.

        2. the FIA should have called for Vettel to come off for safety reasons

Rubbish. It’s clearly not a risk to other drivers the way a loose car part or oil leak is.

        3. the FIA should have called for Vettel to come off for safety reasons

they only tell someone to stop the car when they bring others in danger with bits haning off or driving without a wheel or putting oil all over the track.

Its perfecly possible to drive around missing gears, just not as fast and comfortable as it would otherwise be. Shows how fast the Red Bull is. Vettel took a few laps but found a style that allowed him to drive pretty fine even without some gears.

      2. I guess that was a payback for Silverthorn gap maintainance. Still, they respect number 2 better than Ferrari do theirs with delayed tyre changes etc…it’s so obvious.

    2. best ever result from Sutil will only complicate things

      1. In an ideal world that should have cemented Sutil’s position, if not for Force India then to another reasonably competitive team. That was a lovely drive.

    3. best performance* forgot he got 4th at Monza in ’09

      1. And a couple of 5ths last year.

    4. Nice way to end the season, bit of confidence for Mark going into the next season if only to taste a victory again (never mind how he got it). Amazing stuff from Vettel to hang on to second place and for that probably my driver of the day.

Helmut Marko ought to show Mark some support. Standing there with a face like a smacked bum.

    5. Sad over the team orders.

      1. …if there were any. We didn’t hear any.

        1. Vettel clearly could have held webber back.

          1. For what? There was some 40 odd laps to go when Mark caught up. It was only a matter of time when he would find a way past.
It would be pointless of them to fight, and damage their tyres and risk a race win.
No one was sure that Alonso wouldn’t pick off Vettel, so it was the right decision to let Webber by and focus on what was important.

            1. Nonetheless hidden team orders.

          2. Everyone including Vettel knows it’s useless and just matter of time.

          3. I think that maybe earlier in the season, before the WDC was sealed, Red Bull might have told Webber to hold station behind Vettel, to cover him.

But there was no need to tell Vettel to let Webber past, he was going quite a bit slower for a number of laps before he found a new rithm with the damaged gears, so Webber would have found a way past in those laps, just as well as Button found his way past Alonso.
Or do you thing Ferrari told Alonso to let Button past as well?

        2. Because we didn’t hear any, doesn’t mean they did not happen, and doesn’t mean they happened either.
IMO, it was all manufactured, and they wanted to give Mark the win – and he knew that. Just my opinion and an assumption.

          1. Around lap 40, Vettel makes the fastest lap?!?…and he was so happy with the 2nd to Webber which was never the case in the past…poor excuses during the press…
Webber eyes blinking to make things up…he knows he didn’t win it.

        3. @keithcollantine We didn’t hear any in Hockenheim 2010 either.

          1. We didn’t. But I am pretty sure FOM would have played any message to Red Bull to let Webber past if there had been anything like that.
It’s not as if they had to hide anything this year as it’s no longer illegal (or would they hide it so as not to upset Webber??).

            1. @BasCB That’s what I (and a few others) are saying. “Seb your gearbox is broken; short shift.” is his “Mark is faster than you, please confirm you understood the message” moment.

            2. But @raymondu999 why would they want to hide it?
Isn’t it much easier to just tell Seb up front that this is Marks race and he will have to let him past.

I think we really did see Vettel struggle, at least for some 10-15 laps before he found a new rithm with the ailing gearbox.

    6. why was vettel’s tail light blinking?

      1. look for answer to that in the post below by @dmcobern, @hatebreeder

        1. oh so the minute the car goes into wet weather settings, the light turns on? I always thought it was a race control enabled feature.

          1. Yeah, its tied in with that program, guess its to make one less button to push.

    7. DOTW: Alonso. Button needed him to be on hard tyres to get past him..

      1. well button was just as fast on the harder compound as ALO on the softer one……..

        1. because MP4-26 is faster than F150 especially on the harder compound.

          1. Also the Ferraris don’t seem to suffer so much from poor balance when loaded with fuel, whereas JB’s car always seems to come alive at the end of the race. (Not always that way for LH).

    8. He was on wet weather settings to reduce gearbox wear.

    9. great race for sutil .He is fighting for his place hope he stay in Force indias or get a better team

    10. I was rooting for completely different results (I thought it would’ve rained). Otherwise they’re perfectly normal for this season. Good races by Webber, Vettel and Sutil, sad to see Massa off the pace.

    11. Wow.The moral winner of this race is ADRIAN SUTIL. I would like to hear now some words from his usual detractors…. Stellar race. Lap by lap. Time by time. Best from the rest ? Well, no. Both Mercedes cars finished behind him. DiResta ? DiResta should carry Sutil’s soft drink in paddock. He won his points by pure luck – nobody can argue that . He didn’t overtook nobody. He was overtook twice. He finished 4 places and 15 points behind Sutil. Need more ? I don’t think so. Adrian did not deserve a seat @ Williams. He did not deserve a seat at Renault or even Force India. He deserves a place at Ferarri, RBR, McLaren or Mercedes. He proves that he is a strong driver with steel nerves & flawless will. Amen !

      1. Great comment. Loving the passion!

      2. I think you’re over-stating Sutil’s talent! How often does he do this? Not often enough. You need consistency to fight at the top. He’s been at FI long enough now with this supposed super-talent your proposing yet he’s not at any other big 3 yet. Speaks volumes.

      3. Haha! I have to say he’s not always consistent but the second half of 2011 was quite impressive. of course it’s still too small sample, but well, good season ever.

    12. I just noticed, Kobayashi finished in the points for the second race in a row. Considering how tough the second half of the season has been for them, that’s a massive boost for him and the team.

      1. I think they found a bit of speed at the end, at least Kobayashi seemed to get to grips with it a bit more in the last couple of races.

    13. Well, i am not praising Sutil for nothing. His best finish was place 4 @ Monza in 2009. Last year he had 47 points. What was absolutely impressive in this year is his determination and his power to cope with all the challenges on, and especially, off track. Sutil rulz !
