Mark Webber has made some poor starts in recent races but he held position today – despite have a technical problem on the first lap.

“It wasn?t a bad start,” he said. “I didn?t have KERS for the first lap, so it was difficult to put pressure on Lewis, but then I got it back.”

Nico Hulkenberg, meanwhile, lost six places on lap one: “I had some clutch issues and the anti-stall kicked in, which really compromised my getaway and dropped me right to the back of the pack,” he explained.

But Daniel Ricciardo’s start was even worse. Having started sixth, 11 places ahead of his team mate, he can’t have expected to start lap two behind Jean-Eric Vergne in 16th.

“That was not what I was hoping for after starting from sixth on the grid,” said Ricciardo. “The opening lap changed my whole race.

“My initial launch off the line wasn?t great and after that I seemed to go backwards, which made for a very frustrating afternoon. The front wing damage also made matters worse.”

Kimi Raikkonen, Lotus, Bahrain, 2012Given that Raikkonen ended the race just 3.3s behind winner Sebastian Vettel, much was made of the time he lost behind his own team mate at the end of the second stint.

But Raikkonen admitted he lost most time falling behind Felipe Massa at the start – three seconds, whereas Grosjean cost him around two.

“If I hadn?t made a small mistake at the start and allowed Felipe to get through then maybe it would have been a different story, as we spent quite a lot of time fighting with him,” Raikkonen admitted.

On the radio, Grosjean sounded unhappy at having to make his second stop later than Raikkonen, particularly as he had to run the second stint on used tyres.

Michael Schumacher started 22nd and ended the race tenth – some contrast to his performance in Spa last year, when he climbed from 24th to fifth.

This highlights how factors beyond a driver’s control can affect their race. In Spa last year Schumacher benefitted from a crash at the start and the timely intervention of the safety car to gain 19 places from lights to flag.

Today he didn’t have the rub of the green and he had to settle for tenth after being frustrated by DRS problems in qualifiyng plus a gearbox change penalty.

  1. Raikonen get’s podium on 4. race after comeback, while Shumacher is racing/struggling for third season after return + the whining on tires really works as a balsam on my heart which saw the uberboring Schumi domination.

    Great.

    1. If you don’t understand the difference between how competitive the Merc has been in 2010 and 2011 compared to Lotus in 2012, it’s amazing that you’ve been watching f1 for so long and yet hardly know anything about the sport at all.

      Enjoy.

  2. On the radio, Grosjean sounded unhappy at having to make his second stop later than Raikkonen

It was a shame for Romain that he wasn’t a little closer to Vettel in the third stint, otherwise the team might have tried to pit him earlier, pressuring Vettel to pit early as well. As it was, I think Grosjean will understand that, with him racing in no-man’s land and his team mate fighting for the lead, precedence will go to Raikkonen.

As a MSC fan I am deeply annoyed with the team, in only four races Michael has suffered gearbox problems, DRS problems and a bad pitstop, its not the performance and reliability you should expect from a german team. China was supposed to be his first podium…. :(

  4. @keithcollantine Any chance we could have the average race history charts back? The ones that aren’t based on the leader, but the average lap time of the race winner. With pit stops they’re probably easier to read.

    1. @enigma Afraid not – as I wrote back at the start of the season, I’ve had to cut back and producing two version of essentially the same data is one thing that had to go. More info here.

      1. Ah, forgot about that. Fair enough.

  5. Did di Resta and Grosjean actually lead the race? They were the first to the Start/ Finish line but Vettel was at the pit lane entry before them and was hence classified 1st on the respective laps IIRC?

  6. Oops they would have lead on the next lap then. My bad.

  7. Ricciardo caught Webberitis at the start

    1. Total free fall, massive shame for him really.
