If there’s such a thing as an average race in 2012 then the Italian Grand Prix may well have been it.

F1 Fanatic readers gave it an average rating of 7.64 out of ten which means it ranks seventh of the 13 races so far.

The race saw Lewis Hamilton score his 20th Grand Prix win, extending McLaren’s string of victories to three.

Among the highlights were another impressive drive from Sauber’s Sergio Perez as he finished second, passing the two Ferraris in the latter stages, much to the dismay of the enthusiastic Tifosi.

With plenty going on in the race, the overall response from readers was positive:

Apart from the lead, the race was packed. Great battles, lots of overtaking manoeuvres and some solid driving from many drivers made this race exciting.
Dimitris1395

I gave it a nine. Challenging track and an exciting race, shame about the retirements though.
Mclarengal

Classic Italian Grand Prix. Clean, comprehensible, great battles on track, mechanical issues provided an element of surprise. It had absolutely everything.
AntonioNartea

There was much praise for Perez’s efforts:

It was great to see Perez fighting and doing a fantastic job getting second.
Baldgye

The last part of the race came alive with Perez having a phenomenal last stint charging from eighth to second.
PedroCosta

However some were left scratching their heads at the stewards’ decisions:

Absolutely ridiculous inconsistent stewarding. I stopped watching the race.
Schmorbraten

Vettel’s penalty is arguable, especially because Alonso got away with it last year, and Rosberg only received a warning in Bahrain.
Andae23

And not everyone rated the race as highly:

Interesting to see so many seven to ten scores. I thought this was probably the dullest race of the year. There simply wasn’t anything to get me excited.
Kaiie

Can’t believe so many have voted eight. It was a boring race with not a lot happening. Five at the most.
Maxthecat

Fernando Alonso might have out-scored most of his closest rivals but the championship is still far from over:

The championship is spiced up and a great first Monza win for Hamilton.
Bobby

With Vettel not finishing and Alonso (only) getting third, it has made the championship a lot more interesting.

  1. Yeh, I can’t say it kept me 100% interested. It became pretty clear fairly quickly that Perez wasn’t going to catch the cruising Hamilton.

    1. @ecwdanselby Oh he was…just not before the number of laps ran out ;)

I didn’t see it happening either to be honest, but it was nice to see him have a go, reminded me of Malaysia.

      1. It would’ve been nice to see what he could’ve done in Spa given his pace through the weekend and in the following race. I’ve been keeping an eye on him during the races all year on the live timing and the kid’s got some serious pace… just needs the right conditions on race day to bring it to the forefront.
Looking forward to what he can do in the final flyawys :D

  2. Looking at it I’m surprised Monaco is the lowest rated – I loved the intensity! Not much happened in the race, but it was always intense, it had suspense. The top 6 being nose-to-tail in the Loews hairpin was properly awesome!

    1. To be fair I don’t like to think of any of races so far being towards the bottom of the list as generally they’ve been that good! Agree with you on Monaco – I thought the cars running that close to eachother towards the end was pretty epic, even if there was no way of overtaking!

      1. I agree with both of you on that, Monaco was certainly not boring.

then again, there always has to be someone in the lower part of every rating.

        1. Add my vote to the discussion, I liked Monaco. Not the best race of the season but seeing 6 cars so close for 70 laps was insane!

    2. Exactly what I’m thinking: I think you can rate this as one of the best ‘races’ we have seen for a long time, as there were five drivers that drove just flawlessly through the unforgiving streets of Monaco. I guess people aren’t looking for that in a race… too bad

      1. Massa was awesome as well! Despite being last of the group he kept up with the other 5, which is more than most people think he can do.

  3. I watched the race twice on the red button ,and missed the start by one lap both times. I am a real Lewis fan ,but couldn’t get any excitment from watching the rest of the race ,except when Fernando and Seb. made a bit of a race of it for a couple of laps. (shame about the penalty a bit harsh I thought). Perez did very well to take second ,but the huge difference in pace between him and even Alonso at the end, made the whole race before seem pointless.

  4. Looking at the ratings for previous seasons (since 2008), the following were the ‘average’ races per season (using the median of the ratings):

    2008 Turkey (6.8), Japan (6.66)
    2009 Abu Dhabi (5.9)
    2010 Malaysia (6.7)
    2011 Italy (7.494)
