The outcome of the Singapore Grand Prix hinged on what the drivers did when the Safety Car was deployed on lap 24.

The Red Bull and Mercedes drivers stayed out, intent on making a further pit stop after the Safety Car had come back in.

But Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen were able to reach the end of the race without stopping, and had enough of a lead to keep their pursuers at bay.

Paul di Resta might have been able to follow the Mercedes drivers past the McLarens but crashed out with seven laps to go, losing a potentially valuable sixth place finish for Force India.

The race charts below show how the race unfolded:

  1. Just saying, but what would have happened had the SC period been shorter? we ended up with 5 laps of SC, mostly because the backmakers had to go round the track.

Maybe Red Bull and Mercedes were expecting the SC period to be shorter, and the tyres of those who didn’t pit would’ve suffered more in the end. JB fell back very quickly in the last couple of laps, and Mark was seriously catching Kimi before he got the message to short shift.

Of course it’d have been near impossible for Rosberg and Webber to get Alonso and regain the original position behind Seb, but maybe with 2 more laps, and worn tyres for the latter… ?

    1. Agreed, it would have been tight for Räikkönen. I think without the problems, Mark may have gotten him anyway.

And when there is a safety car why do they need to wait for the field to bunch up if the car that had the crash is already cleared away? I can see that if serious work needs to be done, it is better if the field is bunched up but I am sure I saw that Ricciardo’s car was gone after one or two laps of safety car. Why not then say immediately that the safety car can come in?

    2. @fer-no65, I had the same thought. Of course, the backmarker-unlap rule is a given, but still I feel the SC period could have been shorter. I also wonder when the strategists on the pit wall expected the race to ‘go green’ again.

Anyway, the long SC periods are a serious problem, in my opinion. Too much of the race distance is lost not racing. I was very thankful, therefore, that there was no SC following DiResta’s crash. Then the race would certainly have finished behind the safety car.

  2. What happened from lap 57 to 60? Vettel opened up at least 10 seconds on every other driver in just these four laps.

    1. Vettel (who was 1 to 2 seconds faster than anyone else anyway) had super soft tyres where all the other front runners were on (worn out) mediums. I bet Vettel could have posted 1.47s easily if he was allowed to.
