2013 Indian Grand Prix lap charts

The unusual nature of the tyres in India meant Sebastian Vettel sacrificed his lead just two laps into the race to get rid of the soft tyres he started on.

Having fallen to 17th, Vettel had to pass many cars to regain the lead, but most of them put up little resistance as doing so would risk incurring unnecessary wear on their tyres and compromising their own strategies.

Vettel was back in second lap by lap 21, trailling team mate Webber who had started on the medium tyres. Could Webber’s alternative strategy have helped him win?

Webber made another of his less than ideal start, losing three places, but even so was leading in clear air by lap nine. His race eventually ended in retirement due to an alternator problem, so could he have beaten Vettel to victory.

It seems very unlikely – as in Japan, Vettel was simply quicker than Webber, and that would have made the difference whichever strategy they had run.

This is borne out by the gaps between them from lap 33. At this point both were on new medium tyres, Webber’s were one lap fresher, yet he continued to slowly drop back from Vettel.

It’s possible the alternator problem which caused his retirement had already begun to affect his car, but as he’d been slower than Vettel by a similar amount earlier in the race and during practice, it’s hard to imagine Webber was on course to win. However it did prevent Red Bull from celebrating their fourth constructors’ championship with a one-two finish.

No way he was going to beat Vettel. But what a run of luck the guy’s having. Singapore: on for a podium or a 4th place at least, car in flames. Korea, recovering from the penalty, and on his way to 3rd or 4th, hits Perez tyre, and then car in flames. Here, the alternator.

Tho, now I think abou tit, just Mark being Mark…

    Starting to remind me of Hamilton last year. Webber’s had problems in: China, Silverstone, Germany, Singapore, Korea, India, Italy. Correct me if I am wrong here, I will point out Webber’s bad luck in 2013, and add if there are more.
    
    -China: Out of fuel, started from the back of the grid.
    -Silverstone: Damage to his front wing on lap 1, dropping him back to the field.
    -Germany: Bad pitstop and a lose tyre causing him to pit again and FIA implemented a fine for lose wheels.
    -Hungary: KERS Issues in qualifying cost him a likely 4th-3rd place on the grid.
    -Italy: Gearbox issue in 6th gear I think??
    -Singapore: As you said, on for a podium or 4th place then the car just died.
    -Korea: Car in flames, Perez hits tyre, race over after recovering from the penalty.
    -Japan *not sure*: He thinks RB did a bad strategy.
    -India: Alternator and problem with 6th gear *I noticed this as the camera switched to him, he braked so early into turn 1*

        @brownerboy Everybody that has followed F1 for more than a year wonder the same thing, since that video doesn’t show anything out of the ordinary in F1.
        
        The only lead drivers who don’t ask for team orders are the ones that know they will be issued without them asking (Hamilton, Alonso). Kinda silly thing to bring up, @brownerboy

maybe Kimi should have been brought in on laps 48-50 when it became clear his tyres were dropping off.With the 20s of a tyre change he would have come out in 7th but with fresher tyres able to push to get past at least 1-2 more cars.But underfuelling put an end to that too.Finishing behind Grosjean today was mostly down to the strategy choice and resulted in him pushing GRO outside in frustration.
E. Boullier might want to take charge of the situation in his team at the moment, with Raikkonen being pushed out of the team by the actions of some key team staff( like Alan Permane who has made clear his views on Raikkonen leaving the team with his previous comments) , if Lotus want to get that 2nd place in the constructor’s championship.The bad atmosphere is clearly not helping them when the objective is clearly in reach, given the speed the Lotus has.

It was clear that Webber would not beat Vettel when he was not able to increase the gap to Vettel when he was in free air whereas Vettel had to go through traffic. This was really the advantage of Webber’s strategy but it did not gain him anything.

For a little while I thought it there might be a battle for the lead, but Vettel didn’t lose much time in traffic. That’s mostly to Vettel’s credit, but I was also a bit disappointed by the way some drivers practically waved Vettel by. I thought Mark drove a pretty good first stint, but he was never going to win it unless Vettel got properly stuck in traffic.

As a Hamilton fan, this was a pretty frustrating race. When Rosberg went for the undercut on Massa, he came out just in front of Grosjean (0.6s) so if Lewis would have pitted the next lap he would have come out behind Grosjean. Perhaps that is why Mercedes chose to pit him a bit later, but stopping at the same time as Massa was never going to do his race any good.

Why oh why did Ferrari choose to start Fernando on the primes, it never works. It’s not that they didn’t have anything to lose, the WDC and WCC were out of reach but the second position in both were theirs to lose. If Fernando had got a podium, it would have been the first time ever with such strategy. Anyway we’ll never know what would have happened without the first turn incident with totally ruined his race.

After the last pitstop he had enough pace to get past Ricciardo, Sutil and di Resta, he even might have finished before Kimi who was a total disaster in the last few laps. A 6th or 7th position would have qualified as a decent recovery drive. But somehow he couldn’t pass Ricciardo in 15th laps!! it was not Fernando’s greatest day to be sure. But I would have appreciated Ricciardo defending from Seb with 1/100 of the effort he put defending from Fernando.

  Alonso’s strategy didn’t work because he had to pit early for a new front wing. The idea was to pit late to avoid traffic, but with a damaged car and a compromised strategy (as he had still to use the soft tyre, not to mention the time lost due to the front wing replacement), there was little he could do.

  Mr win or lose hits the nail on the head, the front wing damage causing him to pit on the first lap ruined his strategy of running long. If he had started on options it would not have mattered so much (apart from the 8 secs or so extra on the pitstop to replace the wing).
  
  Also, starting on primes worked pretty well for Perez, and would have guaranteed Webber 2nd place so wasn’t a bad call imo. As for Ricciardo, well A) he probably didn’t want to annoy his future employers, and B) he was not on the same strategy as Vettel and had nothing to gain holding him up, even if he could.

Interesting the Perez caught the Massa-Grosjean battle by three seconds in the last two laps, would have been interesting if he’d gotten past Hamilton sooner.
