It was another nip-and-tuck battle between then Mercedes drivers in Brazil – but this time it was won by Nico Rosberg.

Lewis Hamilton gave chase as best he could but skidded off at Descida do Lago while trying to gain enough time to jump ahead of his team mate.

“Sorry guys, brake bias too rearwards,” he explained on the radio after spinning off, before suggesting the tyres were only up to doing one flat-out lap at the end of the stint.

As we’ve seen on previous occasions this year, Rosberg prefers not to get too many reminders of the gap when his team mate is bearing down on him. However for much of the final stint the gap was non-existent, Hamilton breathing down Rosberg’s neck.

The Williams drivers were compromised by various problems in the pits. Felipe Massa had a pit lane speeding penalty and Valtteri Bottas had to modify his pit stop procedure to look after his engine. Later in the race he was also advised to alter his driving style in order to protect his motor.

However Jenson Button’s attempt to take advantage of their problems was impaired when he missed a call for him to pit on lap 50.

Lap*FromToMessage
PRGuillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelWe’ve got fairly busy procedures at the start of the race and it’s essential that they’re done in sequence. I think you know them. I’ll just go through them with you once, which is once the car is fired up and on the deck, two static, then you need to go to mode eight, limiter on, toggle torque, and do launch. You can toggle torque with a [unclear] if you want, that’s fine.
PRMarco SchupbachAdrian SutilThe wind is, I think you felt it already, still blowing in your face when you brake for turn one. It’s coming from the front there. Intensity is not so high, bit higher than yesterday.
PRLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonHow’s the temperature of the track?
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonIt’s dropping a bit. 46[C] now.
PRAyao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanGrosjean was one of few drivers to start on the harder medium tyres, he is told which others are doing the same.
Hulkenberg, Kvyat and Sutil from pit lane is on [mediums].
PRLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonMy gut feeling is that I need to be… I should put that wing back in.
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYou have lots of scope on the diff, Lewis.
FLMark TempleKevin MagnussenWarm the brakes to heat the tyres but cool the engine please.
FLPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo feedback on the start, please.
FLLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonFeels slightly under-engaged, I think.
FLGuillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelAll systems are good.
FLBernadette CollinsJenson ButtonAnd a bite point find and four burn-outs at the start of the pit entry.
2Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaTrack slippery turn two, there may be oil down in turn two.
3Valtteri BottasJonathan EddolllsSmall rear graining at the moment.
3Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasCopy, small rear graining.
3Xevi PujolarJean-Eric VergneOK to push the engine
3Jean-Eric VergneXevi PujolarI have a lot of understeer.
4Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonJust be mindful of these tyre temps. Rear right getting close to the limit.
5Tony RossNico RosbergSo Nico try and get brake balance forwards. Rear temperatures hotter than fronts. So rear is becoming a problem.
5Xevi PujolarJean-Eric VergneOK Jev let us know on tyre condition.
5Jean-Eric VergneXevi PujolarIt’s OK so far.
6Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaMassa was the first of the front-runners to pit.
OK Felipe box now.
7Jenson ButtonTom StallardButton was running behind Bottas. Both pitted on lap six and left in the same order.
I think the car in front will be coming in the next lap.
7Tom StallardJenson ButtonOK Jenson.
7Jenson ButtonTom StallardBut it’s whether we want to get in traffic.
7Tom StallardJenson ButtonOK Jenson. Box this lap. We will have a clear track, we will come down two turns.
7Jenson ButtonTom StallardRoger. In this lap.
8Tom StallardJenson ButtonJenson we could be racing cars at the pit exit.
8Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYou know what to do. Push, push.
8Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis box, box. [Medium] tyre, down two turns.
9Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonWe’re going to be doing a long stint on these tyres. You know what to do.
9Jean-Eric VergneXevi PujolarOK now the deg is coming.
9Xevi PujolarJean-Eric VergneOK box now Jes, box.
10Tom StallardJenson ButtonThe car ahead of Bottas is now Sutil. He’s on [medium] from the start of the race.
10Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezPerez had switched to medium tyres on lap six.
So I think we can now gradually begin to increase our pace if you can.
11Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaMassa was given a five-second penalty which he served at his second pit stop on lap 25.
We have a stop-go penalty, we will serve this at the next pit stop but you need a five-second gap to the car behind.
11Felipe MassaAndrew MurdochI don’t understand what I have to do.
11Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaOK we’ve got a five-second stop and go penalty. We will serve it at the next pit stop.
11Felipe MassaAndrew MurdochOK. So we stay on the track, right?
11Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaCopy that, stay on track.
11Felipe MassaAndrew MurdochWhat happened?
11Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaIt was for speeding in the pit lane. We need to increase the gap to the car behind. Five seconds. It’s now 2.2.
11Felipe MassaAndrew MurdochOK. So we stay on the track, right?
12Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonThat right-rear’s now over temp. Need to do some management.
12Tom StallardJenson ButtonNice work.
13Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceFront-right is getting a blister now.
15Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonRight-rear temperature under control but still very hot. Last set worn to zero on the right-rear.
15Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonI have a vibration across the fronts, I think.
15Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonI don’t recall having a lock-up but I’ve got a vibration on my tyres.
15Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYep we agree Lewis. It may be a bit of blistering but jut look after them as much as you can.
16Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoKeep watching your mirrors for Raikkonen, he is catching you. I know you’re status six. If he gets much closer you might need to push on to Vettel to get DRS back.
16Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelSebastian, Daniel has dropped back. Drop back a little as well to save your tyres.
17Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuRear-left is graining. Front, think it’s OK.
18Marco SchupbachAdrian SutilOne more lap, defend as good as you can.
18Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonIt is a blister on the front-right.
18Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis if you can look after it as much as you can, just be careful with that front locking.
18Nico RosbergTony RossMessage sounds edited.
Still too much understeer in this car. And oversteer.
18Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoWe believe Sutil is in this lap.
19Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelGood job. The [mediums] aren’t bulletproof at all. So they are overheating quite a lot. Make sure you look after them. I suggest keep the gap to Alonso.
21Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelEveryone is struggling with deg so stint length is critical.
21Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoPeople who started on [mediums] are starting to pit. Some people have blistered the right-front on [mediums]. Deg is a bit higher than we expected but nobody is really struggling. How is the balance?
21Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieIt started off with understeer but now as I start to push the understeer is still there. I this rear’s always going to be the determining factor. But so far it’s manageable.
22Mark SladePastor MaldonadoLotus switched both drivers from planned-two stop strategies to three stops.
We’re going to go plan B.
22Pastor MaldonadoMark SladeCopy that.
23Jenson ButtonTom StallardFor your information the Williams is not very good on cold tyres.
23Tom StallardJenson ButtonUnderstood Jenson.
23Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasPace is looking good, Valtteri.
24Tony RossNico RosbergLewis pushing hard, gap to Lewis 1.8.
25Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergHulkenberg is told the strategies of the cars in front of him is one soft tyre stint followed by three stints on mediums. He did three stints on mediums then one on softs.
So we think all cars ahead are on soft triple-medium except for Grosjean who looks like he’s trying to two-stop.
25Tony RossNico RosbergSo let us know what aero adjust you want down for the stop.
25Nico RosbergTony RossDown 0.4.
25Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaOK Felipe we’ll box this lap.
26Jenson ButtonTom StallardStarting to lose the rears a little bit. Is it overheating or is itnot hot enough?
26Tom StallardJenson ButtonJenson that is overheating. Massa also… Massa’s in. Massa’s pitted. Let’s push. Target minus two.
27Jenson ButtonTom StallardBig oversteer.
28Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelYou’ll be close to Magnussen at pit out.
28Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelVettel made his second pit stop early on lap 24. It jumped him past three drivers, all of which he finished the race ahead of.
You’re clear. You’ve also cleared Bottas who had a bad pit stop. You cleared Magnussen and Bottas. You’re now clear of Alonso. So settle in your pace, Alonso is doing low 16. 16.1 Alonso.
28Tony RossNico RosbergRosberg pitted, then Hamilton spun at Descida do Lago while trying to build up enough of a gap to jump ahead of him.
OK so you can reduce your pushing. The other car has gone… made a mistake.
29Jenson ButtonTom StallardButton was 3.5 seconds behind Massa before their second pit stops. Massa made his pit stop first, and despite having to serce a five-second penalty he stayed ahead of Button.
Has Massa served his penalty?
29Tom StallardJenson ButtonYes Massa has served his penalty. Car in front Kvyat, ten-lap old [mediums].
30Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonSorry guys, brake bias too rearwards.
30Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonDon’t worry Lewis, all is not lost mate. Keep cracking on, just manage it early in the stint.
30Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasWilliams alter the pit stop procedure for Bottas to protect his engine.
OK we need to go to neutral in the stop and an easy pull-away. Don’t find the hold revs. We need to look after the engine temps. You’ll get the signal, go on the lights.
31Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergHow’s the balance now, Nico? This is a critical phase of the race so we need to be pushing as well as we can here.
31Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceNot very good. I’m doing what I can.
32Tony RossNico RosbergSo just be aware your team mate is pushing quite hard. Gap is six seconds. Just remember to control the gap.
32Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergThis pace is good, we are catching Raikkonen now.
34Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonHamilton advised his team the tyres won’t stand being pushed for two laps when they are very worn, as they were trying to do when he went off.
Why not next time you tell me to push, and I only have one lap, use one lap of the tyre up, second lap there’s nothing left.
34Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceWhat are we doing on front wing next stop?
34Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergIt’s another set of mediums, it’s up to you. From this side plus half a turn but it’s up to you.
34Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceNo we’re not coming up, we need to go a bit lower on aero balance. The rear is a difficult tyre now.
37Tony RossNico RosbergGap to Lewis is 5.3.
37Nico RosbergTony RossDon’t tell me the gap any more for a while, please.
37Tony RossNico RosbergCopy.
38Nico RosbergTony RossHow many laps?
38Tony RossNico RosbergRich 12.
39Tom StallardJenson ButtonCar behind is now Vettel, his [medium] tyre is three laps older than yours.
40Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieRicciardo suspected he had a brake failure, it turned out to be a problem with his suspension, and it put him out.
Yeah left-front brake’s gone, I can feel it start to wobble. Shall I just cruise back to the pits?
40Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoYeah understood Daniel. If you think it’s unsafe, stop the car. Otherwise drive back slowly.
40Adrian SutilMarco SchupbachThe tyres are going down.
40Marco SchupbachAdrian SutilOK, is one more lap OK?
40Marco SchupbachAdrian SutilQuick. OK box, box.
40Adrian SutilMarco SchupbachOK.
41Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK Daniel we’re going to inspect the car, box this lap. Will be a slow pit stop. We’ll let you know if we’re going to send you again.
41Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieI’m pretty sure it’s done.
41Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK Daniel switch off, please, switch off.
41Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieOK. Yeah, so started to feel basically a wobble on the brakes for the last five laps.
41Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoWe’ll have a bit more of a chat when you jump out.
41Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK.
43Antonio SpagnoloKimi RaikkonenIt’s close to be a two-stop. If we can manage to [unclear] this run until the end. We need around four laps, four laps more we need.
43Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasDo you think we need to stop? Is this tyre dead.
43Valtteri BottasJonathan EddolllsYeah we have maybe one lap left so we better stop.
43Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasCopy. Box now.
44Daniil KvyatMarco MatassaI’m a lot quicker than Jev, I can get past Hulkenberg.
45Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezYou are free to push now on these tyres if you can, if there’s anything left in it Checo.
45Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelAny extra laps we do in this stint will help us in the next one.
46Jenson ButtonTom StallardIs everything OK?
46Tom StallardJenson ButtonYes, Jenson, this is good.
46Tony RossNico RosbergGap to Lewis is 2.5. It’ll be rich 3 at the end of this lap.
46Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaWe need at least six more timed laps from this tyre set.
47Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelRight Sebastian we would like two hard laps now please. Your right-rear is on the limit, I appreciate that. So two laps as fast as you can.
49Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelBox, torque map one and box, Careful on pit entry, it’s very slippery.
49Tom StallardJenson ButtonJB Vettel’s pitted, let’s push now.
50Tom StallardJenson ButtonJenson it’ll be 22 laps. The next tyre is a new one.
51Jenson ButtonTom StallardMcLaren tried to bring Button in on the lap before Massa, but he failed to make it in and they came in on the same lap.
In this lap or not?
51Tom StallardJenson ButtonBox, box this lap.
51Jenson ButtonTom StallardToo late, too late.
51Tom StallardJenson ButtonJenson we are box this lap. Push, push.
51Jenson ButtonTom StallardBox this lap.
52Tony RossNico RosbergLewis exiting the box now, should be safe by 1.5 seconds.
53Tom StallardJenson ButtonAnd Jenson car in front is Raikkonen on six-lap-old [medium]. He may go to the end, we need to overtake him.
53Jenson ButtonTom StallardOK.
53Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoBox now, box, Start map on.
54Jenson ButtonTom StallardHow many laps did we do on the last set of tyres?
54Tom StallardJenson Button22 laps. And Jenson that was a used set, this is new.
55Marco MatassaDaniil KvyatAbsolutely good job on fuel and tyres, Dany, keep going.
56Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonJust think about protecting that right-rear, Lewis, it is getting hot.
56Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasBottas continued to manage his engine problem.
We need to use a lower gear in turn ten [Bico de Pato] for the engine, remember torque nine for more push if you need.
57Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaOK Felipe 15 laps to go, just keep managing the tyres.
58Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceNow the rear feels good again.
58Xevi PujolarJean-Eric VergneRear tyre temperatures still high. Next two cars behind Rosberg and Hamilton, you’ll get blue flags soon.
59Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergTyres looks good, that was a good lap time. We think Kimi behind is going to the end. We’re now racing Magnussen, we outpaced him on that lap, two-tenths.
60Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasFor info, behind Pastor are Rosberg and Hamilton who are battling for the lead. So they’ll be going through Pastor shortly, and we need to look out for them. I’ll keep you advised. Respect engine speed turn ten.
61Mark TempleKevin MagnussenFor info car in front is Kvyat. He will have to pit again as he’s not yet run a [soft]. There’s also Hulkenberg, who’s currently just inside our pit gap. He too will have to pit and fit a [soft]. We will be racing Hulkenberg at the end.
63Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaOK next car behind is Button, he’s P4 and he’s 12 seconds behind you.
65Mark TempleKevin MagnussenHulkenberg’s tyres will deg off at the end of the race. Let’s give it everything to keep him behind now, he will struggle at the end.
65Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaWe need a bit more management on the rear tyres.
67Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuGrosjean retired.
Loss of power.
67Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanOK we are looking, scenario 11.
67Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuDo I retire? There’s smoke fromther back of the car.
67Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanOK stop the car.
67Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuYeah [unclear]
67Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanOK try to stop close to fire marshal please. P1 then wait for ten seconds, then go to P0 please.
VLTony RossNico RosbergWell done Nico, good job, great job out there in difficult conditions. Strat one, charge the battery, really good job Nico.
VLNico RosbergTony RossThanks a lot guys, great job.
VLPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonWell done Lewis, great effort there mate, great racing. Just sorry about that stop.

  1. I doubt that the one lap earlier pit stop for Jenson would have made a difference in the end though. Massa’s straight line speed should have secured P3 anyway. It would have, however, given the viewers a nice fight for the final podium step perhaps..

  2. If prize money were awarded based on the number of radio messages,Ferrari would have been poorer than Caterham or Marussia..

I know this isn’t a complete list of radio message that are exchanged during the race, but still, very low compared to others.
Honestly, doesn’t Kimi and Alonso have ANYTHING to ask their radio guys?

    1. yeah I was thinking Ferrari must be censoring the transcripts

      1. I think Ferrari use a lot of Italian language in their messages so they are less likely to be played on air as this transcript is only of the messages broadcast on the pit channel, not all radio traffic in total as some teams say they send and receive over 300 messages during the race.

This still gives a great insight into what goes on in the cockpit and pit wall.

    2. They’re out of the spotlight and still censor most of the messages. Great team.
We can say goodbye to Vettel’s radio messages. And hello to more from Alonso next year.

  3. Some strangely mixed messages from RB to their two drivers.

Lap 21 (to SV) “Everyone is struggling with deg so stint length is critical.”
Lap 21 (to DR) “Deg is a bit higher than we expected but nobody is really struggling.”

Lap 16 (to DR) “If (KR) gets much closer you might need to push on to Vettel to get DRS back.” (That is, speed up)
Lap 16 (to SV) “Sebastian, Daniel has dropped back. Drop back a little as well to save your tyres.” (That is, slow down)
