Red Bull are pleased with the pace shown by their new car despite continuing problems limiting Daniel Ricciardo to 59 laps during today’s test at the Circuit de Catalunya.

The RB11 is still yet to cover more than a grand prix’s worth of running in a single day as F1 reaches the halfway point in pre-season testing tomorrow.

The team’s head of race engineering Guillaume Rocquelin admitted they had a “slightly difficult morning” at the Circuit de Catalunya but said it was “not wholly unexpected given that we had some new parts here which needed to be dialled in”.

“There were some software issues in the morning which held us back a bit,” he added, “but while those were being sorted out we were able to get through some aero mapping work, which was useful”.

Ricciardo ended the day with the third-quickest time behind Pastor Maldonado’s Lotus and Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari.

“The car got better and better through the day and in the end Daniel was able to run on the pace,” said Rocquelin.

“We did mostly short runs today as that suited the game plan for the updates we have but by the afternoon I think we could have sent him out for as long as we wanted as the car was running well at that stage.

“Ultimately, what we got today is pretty much what you’d expect from the first day of a test at which there are quite a few new things to factor in.”

  1. Remember what Massa said after 2014 pre-season testing-
‘You never rule Red Bull out.’
