Shouldn’t Alonso have a 10 place penalty as well?

    1. @come-on-kubica I think he got it last race when they introduced the PU during practice. I could be wrong though.

      1. @come-on-kubica To the best of my knowledge he doesn’t have one – there certainly wasn’t one announced on Friday. He does usually seem to get one so I can see why you might think that.

Ahh fair enough, thought the new and improved Honda engine was installed this weekend and they changed it.

    2. F1.com doesn’t have the Bottas penalty at all. Somebodies grid is wrong.

  2. Is it expected that the weather to be better or worse during the race? Should be fun. Shame for Vettel’s penalty, would have been fun to have him going against the Red Bulls.

Speaking of RBR, very strong performance from them, to think that some not-particularly-well-thought comments were bashing them for not taking penalties this race and test the new Renault PU for the sake of it.

    1. Weather should improve.

    2. The radar (and crystal ball) predictions show an improvement over the next few hours — probably not a dry race, but showers only.

    3. Should stop raining around the race start, so maybe SC for a bit until they want to come in for inters (ha!); might be drying up near the end of the race.

      1. @fastiesty I really hope that isn’t the case, every F1 race seems to do that and it’s not great to watch :(

        1. @strontium Looks like the rain stopped 90 minutes before the start – so we should see a normal start, inters, maybe a gamble near the end on slicks?!

          1. it’s not great to watch

@fastiesty I think it’s fair to say I was wrong!!

          2. @strontium The great drainage of COTA really helped in bringing in a Canada 2011 type situation – the cars got faster and faster as the race went on!

The other guarantee of excitement is Canada 2014 – cars can push for the lead, but have to defend until the chequered flag against those who ran an even pace or held back at the start for a push at the end.

The latter one was an effect of a setting on the early F1 playstation games that always led to 2012 type unpredictability!

    4. I’m here and the rain has let up substantially. Race should be a go!

  3. Rosberg is very adaptable and excellent at hammering a fast lap straight off the bat in unknown conditions. With that being said, I still think that Lewis will win later today, he tends to grow into these conditions as time goes on.

Rosberg is also horrible at taking care of these Pirelli inters across long stints. He destroyed 2 sets of tyres faster than Schumi used one at Malaysia 2012, and destroyed his first set of inters at Japan 2014 when Lewis took him around the outside.

    1. Interesting that the FIA prohibited the use of inter during quali and FP3. Are the wets that bad that teams would have considered using intermediates?

      1. Someone desperate enough might try to get ahead of field by using inters if they aren’t banned. But as far as I know drivers and teams would not do anything stupid as they know the risks of doing so, especially today as the race is only 4 hours away from quali end. But it is a good decision from FIA coz the conditions caught out all WDCs in grid except ALO even on wets

    2. “Rosberg is very adaptable and excellent at hammering a fast lap straight off the bat in unknown conditions.”

To be fair Lewis has a firm eye on the title, he dosn’t need to bin it in the wall in qualifying and have to start the race from the back in those conditions.

  4. So a 20 place penalty for Will Stevens only make a difference of more than one place due to Rai and Sainz penalties – these penalties are utter nonsense

    1. @wombat1m Stevens could only ever lose places with penalties if others get penalties to end up behind him in the first place!

      1. point taken – brain not working there! But that just makes it even more stupid!

  5. What are the chances that race might get cancelled completely due to weather today?

      1. That’s great :)

Has vettel also started in top 10 it will be a cracker of a race with HAM and VET on wet track. Missing heroics from BUT and ALO :(
Hope HUL makes up for them and scores a podium

        Thanks

    1. Rain has basically stopped

  6. imagine a race like Canada 2011
(a Vettel charge through the field instead of Button)

    predictions
    1. ROS
    2. RIC
    3. HAM
    4. MAS
    5. PER
    6. VET
    7. ALO
    8. RAI
    9. BOT
    10. BUT

    1. Not easy for Seb to take out his two main rivals, keep running, and have the third go off in front of him, but I guess you never know ;)

  7. @keithcollantine the provisional grid on the FIA website (listed in the preliminary classification document) is different.

It has 13 Maldonado, 14 Vettel, 15 Ericsson. I think because Seb’s penalty must have been applied before Kimi’s so he dropped to 15th, and then when Kimi dropped to 18th he moved back up one place to 14th.

    1. Correct. Also it seems Bottas will drop 5 places for a gear box change so VET will start 13th. @keithcollantine

    2. You just know Ferrari will have applied for Kimi’s penalty first, so Vettel would only lose a net 9 places in most eventualities..

      1. Unless I got that the wrong way around.. I must have flunked the FIA penalty applications exam.
