Nico Rosberg says he wants to win “really badly” after taking his third pole position in a row at the United States Grand Prix.

Rosberg wasn’t able to convert his last two pole positions into victories after being passed by Lewis Hamilton at the start in Japan and retiring early in Russia.

However he said he has “no idea” whether the race will be wet or dry following today’s rain-hit qualifying session. “It was supposed to be drying out from now onwards,” he said.

“Our car is great in any conditions,” he added, “full wets, intermediates, dries, whatever is fine for me”

Rosberg set his pole position lap in Q2 as deteriorating conditions led to Q3 being cancelled.

“I was comfortable in the car,” he said, “It was difficult out there with aquaplaning everywhere because when that happens you really struggle to control the car. It snaps suddenly without warning. It was challenging out there.”

Rosberg added he set his pole position “with a used set of tyres so that was even better – so with Q3 I had a new set ready to go”.

  1. You know what they say: third time’s the charm. I just hope that Nico can put a fight against Hamilton.

Lets hope he wins to add some thrill to the final races. Of course Seb winning would be wonderful but I am realistic.

  3. Folk seem to credit Rosberg with his excellent wet weather skills. His ability in the wet isn’t in any doubt but I seem to remember Lewis being good in the wet also.

I like Rosberg, but I think his job today will be tough.

  4. It would be nice to see Rosberg hold onto a lead (and not see his car give up on him as we saw last year), but I just hope we will get a real race in Austin

  5. I fear that he’s going to simply shred and destroy his Pirelli intermediates just like he did at Malaysia 2012 and Japan 2014. Hopefully I’m wrong this time.

    1. Malaysia 2012 wasn’t a case of shredding the tyres, it was the exact opposite. The team decided, after experiencing disastrous wear in Melbourne, to use more conservative settings in Malaysia. They ended up pitting Rosberg 4 times, but as it turned out, his tyres showed little to no wear at all.

  6. 2014 Japanese GP anyone?

  7. I’m just hoping we get a standing start no running behind a safety car. If he can hold on to the win then good for him.

    1. Looks like the rain will stop around start time, so there are two options, delay for a bit and use dryers, or SC start and then see how long they want to wait until someone wants to try inters (at which point the SC will come in, heh).
