Jenson Button says that it is ‘pretty good’ for McLaren to have both cars starting from the fourth row of the grid, but says that is still not enough for the team.
After showing solid top ten pace all weekend, both Button and team mate Fernando Alonso successfully adapted to the challenging conditions in qualifying to secure McLaren’s first double Q3 appearance since joining forces with Honda last season.
“It’s pretty good to have two cars in the top ten, but as soon as you say that, that’s not enough,” says Button. “I don’t know where other people are in terms of quick cars. I think we’re in front of all the cars that we should be racing, all the others in front are way too fast.”
Button was another driver caught out by his team mate’s late spin and rues missing out on an opportunity to improve his time at the chequered flag.
“I was definitely up on my lap by a few tenths, but I don’t know if it would’ve made a difference in the end because of the yellow flag,” says Button. “But it is what it is. In those conditions, it’s obviously quite tricky.
“I’m starting on the dirty side tomorrow, which will be tough, but we’ll make the best of it. It’s new asphalt and also with the rain today, who knows? It might actually be better. Let’s think that way.”

“Cup-half-empty” Button should stop whinging and show a little appreciation of the gains McLaren have fought for. There may be a long way to go to P1, but this result is a significant milestone.
