Lewis Hamilton lost the advantage of pole position immediately in the Italian Grand Prix – just as he did at the same race two years ago.

But unlike in 2014 Hamilton was unable to recapture his lost lead and take back victory. He recovered to second place but made no impression on Nico Rosberg’s lead after his pit stop.

After Hamilton’s early passes on Daniel Ricciardo and Valtteri Bottas the most significant moves of the race came at the end as the Red Bull drivers moved up the order.

Force India brought Sergio Perez in early in a bid to get him ahead of Max Verstappen using the undercut. This worked, but the Red Bull was too quick in the final stint for the Force India to resist even with its straight-line speed advantage.

  1. Examining Wehrlein’s pace is quite impressive, it seems they genuinely had speed this weekend. Monza favours the engines of course, so good for Manor, but apart from the reliability problems the car doesn’t seem like a total dog. Very pleased to see that, and hopefully it’s a good sign for the future.
