Max Verstappen climbed 13 places in just 14 laps to claim a place on the podium at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Verstappen fell to 16th after his pit stop on lap 54. But he immediately gained two places, one thanks to Fernando Alonso’s spin, and set about carving his way through the field.

From lap 55 to 62 he picked off one car per lap including team mate Daniel Ricciardo whose tyres were only two laps older than his.

Verstappen also took Nico Hulkenberg, Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz Jnr on consecutive laps which put him fourth. The coup de grace came on the 68th lap, when he took the final podium position off Sergio Perez.

He may only have finished one place higher than he started, but the spectacular manner in which he did it will make the Brazilian Grand Prix one to be remembered for a long time.

  1. Without the RBR team’s strategic blunder it would have come to a dice for the win between Max and Lewis (I do assume that Nico wouldn’t have been able to hold P2). Sorry to have missed that, but I felt that Max deserved the win today.

And a P2 for Lewis would complicate the WDC even more for him. With Nico at P3 today and the countback favoring Lewis (one more P2), Nico would need only a P6 at Abu Dhabi which sounds easy enough. As it really is, Nico needs just a podium (not terribly difficult, either).

    1. Look at the pace Lewis had – Max was not a threat for P1. Remember that if he hadn’t changed tyres (and then benefited from a safety car), he would have been on tyres the same age as the Mercedes.

Rosberg would be destroyed. Lewis would be smiling!
