In extremely challenging conditions, the quickest lap of the Brazilian Grand Prix was over ten seconds slower than last year.

Unusually for an F1 race, not only did it start wet but persistent rain meant it stayed that way. Six of the points-scoring drivers spent the entire race on wet weather tyres without using the intermediates.

While neither Mercedes driver needed to push hard at the front of the field, the fact both Red Bulls appeared at the top of the lap times table indicates they had the pace to take on the Mercedes drivers.

Third for Max Verstappen and eighth for Daniel Ricciardo has to be a disappointment. Both, of course, tried to use the intermediate tyres and then had to pit again to get rid of them.
