Passes on both Renault drivers helped Sergio Perez gain the most places of any driver during the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Force India driver moved up eleven places over the course of a race in which no one else gained more than four. Five of those came on the first lap, but after that he picked off Jolyon Palmer as he continued to rise through the order.

As the team acknowledged the timing of the Safety Car played into Perez’s hands as it allowed him to get his first pit stop out of the way with minimal time loss. Crucially they used it to put on another set of super-soft tyres, committing to a further stop later in the race, but giving Perez a grip advantage at the restart which he used to pass Marcus Ericsson and Hulkenberg.

  1. Wow. This chart highlights Bottas’ struggle – he was much slower than Vettel from laps 16-29 and 44-57.

Similarly, Raikkonen’s pace between laps 24(after passing Massa) and 32 was ppor. He was dropping rapidly back from Vettel and Hamilton, although catching Bottas.

Hamilton’s pace on old tyres from 27-32 (once released by Bottas) was very impressive. I don’t think that the inroads he made between 43-54 matter quite as much – because Vettel was cruising.
