Mick Schumacher says he is “totally confident” he can handle the pressure of making his F2 debut and driving two different F1 cars for the first time within five days.

The European Formula Three champion told a packed media conference in Bahrain he will prioritise his F2 race debut on Saturday before switching his attention to his first F1 test with Ferrari on Tuesday. He will then drive for Alfa Romeo in the second day of testing at the Sakhir circuit on Wednesday.

Asked by RaceFans if he was concerned he was taking on too much with his packed five-day schedule, Schumacher said he is “totally confident” he can handle it. “I am confident I’m ready,” he added.

Schumacher was reluctant to comment on his upcoming F1 test debut and refused even to confirm whether he had done any simulator work ahead of his first run in the SF90. He said it was “very exciting” to learn of his upcoming debut for Ferrari. “Obviously I’m very happy about the whole thing but for now my focus is really on F2.”

As the son of seven-times F1 champion Michael Schumacher, the 20-year-old has faced considerable media interest as he has risen up the junior categories. He said he’s grown more accustomed to handling the attention.

“Obviously it’s part of me and obviously I’m the son of my dad and I’m happy that I am. What he’s done is the best ever in F1 so it’s something I look up to. I’m happy to have him as my dad.

“It’s always been part of me so I guess I’ve had the time and the chance to grow into that,” he added. “I have a lot of people behind me that helped me overcome.”

The news of his chance to drive an F1 car for the first time “came pretty sudden but also pretty quick,” he added. “I’m just really happy to be here.”
