Renault ran their car so low on downforce on Friday that Daniel Ricciardo trashed two sets of tyres trying to get it stopped.
Ferrari looked on it in practice, though Sebastian Vettel was out-paced by his team mate, who headed all three sessions.
Baku track master Sergio Perez did the business as usual – he was ‘best of the rest’ in qualifying and the race, bagging sixth for Racing Point.
Alexander Albon avoided a repeat of his China crash but also didn’t manage to score any points.
After qualifying Kimi Raikkonen was unhappy the poor track position on his final lap meant he was far off his potential pace. He was even less happy when he was ordered to start from the pit lane when his front wing was found to be illegal.
Vettel was outfoced by the Mercedes pair in qualifying, who let him by at the pit lane exit so he couldn’t benefit from their slipstream.
Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton
The Mercedes drivers gave each other racing room at the start, which helped pole sitter Valtteri Bottas keep his lead.

In the race’s most bizarre moment, Ricciardo reversed into the innocent Daniil Kvyat, who had just been bundled up an escape road by the Renault driver.
