Max Verstappen wasn’t the only driver whose superb pace in the second half of the race helped him pass several cars ahead of him.

Carlos Sainz Jnr, who started on the back row of the grid, climbed through the field after his pit stop to finish a superb eighth. And it might have been better had he not damaged his front wing with around 10 laps to go.

Nonetheless Sainz finished 11 places higher than he started, which is the biggest gain from start to finish any driver has managed so far this year.

Verstappen lost six places at the start when his car went into anti-stall mode. He recovered one of those by the end of the first lap by passing his team mate Pierre Gasly, but it seemed unlikely he would be in contention for victory come the end of the race.

However when the Mercedes pitted early, prompting a reaction from Ferrari, it presented Verstappen with an opportunity. He pitted nine laps later than original race leader Leclerc, and the performance advantage he enjoyed on his fresher tyres helped him fight his way through the field.

At the other end of the field, Robert Kubica had what must rank as one of the worst races since his comeback. His quickest lap time was a second slower than his team mate’s and he was lapped three times.

It was another race to forget for Haas, too. Having set the fifth-fastest time in qualifying Kevin Magnussen sank in the race, collected a drive-through penalty for being out of position at the start and was beaten by George Russell in the other Williams.

  1. 1st place, fastest lap and fastest pit stop is an interesting hat-trick for Max.

One of the more incredible fastest laps of the season too: 30 lap old hard tyres vs Seb’s 10 lap old soft tyres.

Just think, if he’d not messed up the start, he could have dominated today!

    1. @eurobron

And we would have called it the most boring race ever… :)
Part of me kinda wishes he never gets the best car and keeps treating us with beauties like today.

    2. I think if he’d run second to leclerc for the first stint, ferrari would have run a different kind of race. they may still have lost – verstappen was inspired today – but max’s problem at the start may well have contributed to his victory.
