Williams founder Frank Williams was back in the paddock throughout the weekend, overseeing work at the team which took its first victory at Silverstone 40 years ago. He hopes to return again at Spa.

It was a great weekend for Silverstone: Besides a strong crowd and a cracking race, a new five-year deal keeping the British Grand Prix on the calendar was announced. The place was packed from Thursdya afternoon – this is the fan area at the old Priory corner, last used 10 years ago.

Romain Grosjean

Ahead of the race Haas’s title sponsor Rich Energy announced its was withdrawing its backing of the team, prompting a weekend-long row between the company and its CEO William Storey which the F1 team inevitably found itself in the midst of. Under the circumstances, team principal Guenther Steiner did not need Romain Grosjean knocking the front wing off against the pit wall exit on Friday, especially as he was running the team’s Australia-specification aerodynamics in a bid to understand where it had gone wrong with the VF-19. But that paled in comparison to Sunday, when the team’s two drivers collided on the first lap, leading both to retire.

Kimi Raikkonen

Kimi Raikkonen sampled the car which won the very first world championship race held at Silverstone in 1950 – the Alfa Romeo 159 ‘Alfetta’.

Home favourite Lewis Hamilton was denied pole position by six-thousandths of a second in the closest front row for nine years. Valtteri Bottas kept him back at the start – to begin with, at least.

Antonio Giovinazzi

A thrilling start to the race was interrupted when Antonio Giovinazzi spun his contemporary Alfa Romeo into a gravel trap.

Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc

Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc picked up where they left off in Austria two weeks earlier and thrilled the crowd with their no-holds-barred scrap. Did the stewards give them freer rein to fight? The race director said no, but Verstappen got away with this re-pass outside track limits.

Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel’s fight with Verstappen was a briefer affair: He punted the Red Bull into the gravel at Vale.

The Safety Car played into Hamilton’s hands, but it also helped that Bottas locked himself into a two-stop strategy early on.

As usual Hamilton sent the BRDC trophy flying above the podium. He’s now won at Silverstone more times than any other driver, however, so he’s had plenty of practice at catching it.

  1. What a great photo of the trophy in flight.

    1. @JC Yes indeed. I was about to post the same until I saw someone had already done that — a well-timed photo.

    2. I honestly thought it was displayed on the screen showing the Union Jack! It had me wondering why it was displayed off kilter. It took me reading the caption to understand what was going on :)

  2. Great photos, always enjoy this article after every race.

I actually think some of my Instagram pics rival these. Follow me @cgresty I was lucky enough to get some good ones, especially of the bottas Hamilton fight.

Also DM me for the high quality versions of my pics via GoogleDrive.

  3. RBR build their cars tough.

    1. Not the rear wings, apparently.
