Brilliant job by Mclaren there. Guess this is last year for Gasly and Bottas in their teams.

That was exiting!!
Too bad redbull didn’t recognize it was a 2 stop race.

Being in front makes very difficult to take bold decisions: there’s too much on the line, there’s a victory at stake. I was really looking forward to the moment when Red Bull and Max would feel the real heat. Talking is always easier than delivering, even tough I really liked Max trying to get under Lewis’ skin.

For me the highlight of the race was that the Iceman managed to keep fellow Finn behind and leaving him crushed.
Well done Hamilton that was a splendid performance and for once feeling a bit gutted for VER. Awesome overtake from VET and put LEC in his place. Ferrari going backwards as usual at this time of the year.

What the heck Kimi is doing with midfield car?

Kimi didn’t get the memo that he was demoted to the midfield :)

Brilliant drive by Hamilton, clean on track passes on his teammate and Verstappen. Great strategy call by Mercedes but Red Bull are partly to blame as if they had a competent second driver then I doubt Hamilton would have had a free pitstop. With hindsight they should have switched Verstappen to softs with 10 to go when the gap was 13 seconds and they would have had 5-6 seconds to catch Hamilton in 10 laps but with tyres that Verstappen could lap a second a lap quicker.
Very poor drive by Bottas. Ferrari were nowhere. Good Mclaren result although shame the pit stop cost Norris a few places. Gasly shouldn’t survive the break, lapped by his teammate again in a accident free dry race, time for Kvyat to get the call.

@slowmo Good point. Now Max Verstappen is contending up front and in the championship (for second), Red Bull really need the second driver closer to him to help on strategy at least, if not to take points off rivals.

To be fair, both Hamilton and Verstappen were in that predicament, reference extra stop. Mercedes exercised the option or at least considered it, I don’t think Red bull did.

@icarby Hamilton’s tyres were 6 laps fresher, so had Verstappen pitted and Hamilton stayed out, would the situation have reversed? Very marginal. I guess that’s why Red Bull didn’t try. But if, say, Ricciardo had been behind Hamilton in the Red Bull, Mercedes would have been much more reluctant to pit him again as he’d have to clear Ricciardo too.

Ferrari were ‘nowhere’? They finished 3rd and 4th and that should count for something, no? (Full disclosure, haven’t watched it yet, as I was at a wedding all night and didn’t wake up until just a bit ago)

They were nearly over a second per lap slower over the race distance. For a team wanting to fight for the championship that’s pretty bad. Without Bottas being in the mix they’re looking at not making the podium for the foreseeable future if that form continues.

They were waaaaay off the pace. They were just racing one another on different strategies. Ferrari are lucky to have made it on to the podium, only because Bottas had to pit early for a front wing change, and he didn’t slice his way through the field thereafter.

Well done Russel to keep of Stroll! Didn’t see a thing, but the timing screen showed there were 1 sec apart for a long time at the end.

Indeed. As well as Ver/Ham, Sainz and Russel were the drivers of the day. Stroll is just terrible, absolutely awful.

Hamilton, what a brilliant drive. Absolutely fantastic, just goes to show what happens when a well-coordinated team produces a superb car and puts the best driver around into it – irresistible combination. Rumours of there being a “changing of the guard” at F1’s top table are clearly exaggerated.
Carlos Sainz Jr continues to overdrive the McLaren. Starting 8th, behind his teammate and using the clearly rather poor Renault engine, finishing ‘best of the rest’ in 5th and beating the arguably faster Red Bull of Gasly…for me, the hype around Leclerc and others aside, Carlos is one of the most complete drivers on the circuit.
And, for a sense of just how superior Lewis and Max are as drivers, just look at where their respective teammates finished the race…Driver of the Day for me: Lewis.

7/10- One of those slow-burner classics. Was a bit disappointed at how Hamilton just swept passed Verstappen in the final 3 laps but I guess it just goes to show how dead his tires were. Vettel’s move on Leclerc was a cracker. Great to see Vettel regain his mettle and challenge Leclerc like that just as we thought Vettel was losing the team battle to the young challenger.

Shame for Max, he gave it all against the Merc rocket ship but was let down by RedBull not reacting quick enough to cover the pitstop. That Merc is clearly so much better on tyres so they really should not have gambled.
But driver of the day by far. Nobody was close!
