The Formula 2 championship organisers have announced Sunday’s sprint race has been cancelled following the crash which claimed the life of Anthoine Hubert earlier today.
The feature race was red-flagged on the second lap following Hubert’s collision with Juan Manuel Correa. The FIA subsequently confirmed Hubert had died from his injuries.Correa has been taken to hospital in stable condition. FIA president Jean Todt described his injuries as “serious”.
Having previously confirmed the feature race would not be restarted, the Formula 2 have now confirmed that “out of respect, tomorrow’s F2 race has been cancelled.”
In a joint statement, F1, F2 and F3 said the championships were “deeply saddened by the passing of Anthoine Hubert following a horrific crash at today’s feature race at Spa-Francorchamps, involving three other drivers.”
Marino Sato and Giuliano Alesi were also involved in the crash but escaped injury.
“We would like to extend our deepest condolences to Anthoine’s family, loved ones, and friends,” they added. “We would also like to send our heartfelt sympathies to the entire Arden team.
“Anthoine has been part of our paddock since 2017. He was a fantastic driver who had a bright future ahead of him. He became GP3 Series Champion last year, and this season, he won twice in Formula 2, taking victories in Monaco, and at his home race in Le Castellet.
“He was kind to everyone, always smiling, and his positive attitude was infectious. He will be dearly missed.”

Makes sense. Apart from being a sign of respect, I doubt any of the F2 grid would be in a frame of mind to go racing that soon.

@fer-no65 – agreed, I don’t think any of the other drivers (F1, etc.) will be unmoved by this, it’ll definitely be on the back of their minds, as well as their loved ones. It’s just that the impact will be that much harder for the F2 grid, seeing as both drivers were colleagues they interacted with far more than those in other series (e.g. attending drivers briefings).

As soon as the helmet is on, they are racing drivers and the rest doesn’t matter. Just before and after the race it does though and they will most likely be reserved at the parade and on the podium.

That’s why they call it racing. The race should have been run they spit in his face by canceling the race
