Charles Leclerc withstood some serious pressure to win the Italian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton stayed close throughout the opening stint and was never more than one-and-a-half seconds behind the Ferrari. But after Hamilton switched to the medium compound tyres the pressure ratcheted up even further: From lap 28 to 41 he began every lap within a second of Leclerc with just a single exception.

At the end of the race Valtteri Bottas took up the charge and got within half of a second of Leclerc at one point. But errors at the Rettifilio and Roggia chicanes on separate laps gave the Ferrari driver vital breathing room, securing his second win in eight days.

Some unexpected names occupied last position during the race. Max Verstappen fell to the back after breaking his front wing on the first lap. He moved up to 19th when Sebastian Vettel spun at Ascari.

The Ferrari driver passed Romain Grosjean but ended up last again when he was handed a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for hitting Lance Stroll as he pulled onto the track. The Ferrari driver finished 13th after passing George Russell’s Williams on the final lap. Given Vettel had been lapped and finished over half a minute behind the final points place, it’s a wonder Ferrari didn’t retire him to save engine life before the chequered flag.

The driver who did best from the back of the grid was Sergio Perez, who climbed 11 places to finish seventh.
