Alexander Albon says he was caught out by a tailwind when he crashed his Red Bull during his first run in qualifying.

“[I was] caught out a bit with the wind,” said Albon. “It was tricky out there.

“Just went in a bit deep, I thought I’d get away with it else I would have kind of aborted the corner and going into the escape road. But I kind of tried to keep the corner and lost the rear.

“Obviously with a tailwind through there it’s not easy and the wall’s very close on the exit is so unfortunately that was that.”

The Red Bull driver will start tomorrow’s race from the rear of the grid as a result of his crash but Albon is hopeful he will be able to make up places.

“Obviously starting at the back is never great. I’ve done it a few times this year.

“But it’s a good track in terms of fighting and being able to overtake. It’s not a track like Singapore for instance. So we’ll see.

“I think of course strategy now we can choose our tyre and everything like that so we’ll have a look at that and we’ll see where we was can be. I missed out on a bit of a long running in [second practice] with my floor damage so we did get a good stint in [final practice], it was quite good as well so not too worried.”

  1. “Red Bull gives you wings” – the jokes just write themselves.

I presume we’d now have Albon on the last row, and Kvyat starting from the pitlane (as he didn’t set any representative time)? Are RBR fitting a new gearbox for Albon?

Let’s hope he has a clear and successful race tomorrow, otherwise Dr. Marko will soon be breathing down his neck, and that might set his car off again…

    1. @phylyp Kvyat is initially set to start from P20 on the grid, not from the pit lane. Albon P18 and Kubica P19 between them. AFAIA, no, RBR aren’t going to fit a new gearbox for Albon.

      1. @jerejj – thank you for clearing that up 👍

      2. Sure about that?
His car never took place in the quali so normally he had to start form the pits.
If he drove one lap in quali he would have started p20.

        1. he had a lap already done so he did quali.

  2. As in ham/bot in germany crash one of the drivers got a far worse outcome for their mistake. I believe in Albon he just has to humble enough to mimmick verstappen style

  3. Like the look of the short wheelbase RBR. Albon could have a second career in spontaneous car design.

Not a shot at Albon, but at the post 2017 single seat stretch limo designs. Bernie’s parting gift to F1 – more downforce to a series already suffering from terminal downforce addiction.

  4. Why were the fans cheering and clapping when he got out of the car? That’s a **** expensive crash and would be quite upsetting for the driver. They should show respect to all drivers not just Lewis.

      Doesn’t your question answer itself?

  6. I cannot be sure but to me it appeared he crashed because he took a much wider line then everyone else going into the corner and his rear left wheel was on the curb while braking into the corner. While this did not cause the spin itself it unsettled the car and caused him to lose it mid-corner (maybe with the assistance of some wind).
