Ferrari has closed its factor in Maranello, including its Formula 1 operation, in response to the spread of the Coronavirus.

Italy has the highest rate of Coronavirus cases and deaths in Europe by far. As of yesterday, 21,157 cases had been reported, and 1,441 deaths.

“At a time like this my gratitude goes first and foremost to Ferrari’s women and men who, with their tremendous commitment over the past few days, have demonstrated the passion and dedication that defines our marque,” said Ferrari CEO Louis Camilleri.

“Together with our suppliers, they have ensured the company’s production. And it is out of our respect for them, for their peace of mind and those of their families that we have decided on this course of action,” he added. “Our clients and fans are also top of mind for us at this time, as we prepare for a strong restart.”

Elsewhere other Formula 1 teams are continuing their operations. Mercedes confirmed today its chassis facility in Brackley and engine centre in Brixworth, both in the United Kingdom, remain open.

RaceFans understands Renault’s base in Enstone, UK and engine operation in Viry-Chatillon, France also remain open. Racing Point and Williams’ bases in the UK are also open. The Haas team, which has bases in the USA and UK, are also at work, though those who can base themselves at home are doing.

The five teams have all required staff who travelled to Melbourne to remain away from their factories temporarily. Other Formula 1 teams have been approached for comment by RaceFans.

  1. It seems like UK and Italy are in same boat when it comes to current viral infection. Also there have been quite a few cases of Italian and British nationals running away from quarantine in India and spreading infection over here. So there is little to no sympathy for people of these 2 countries.

    1. Yes, cause those “quite a few cases” can be controlled by the rest of us who didn’t do anything and find ourselves in the middle of a pandemic.

      1. Next time I will get a wand and build a wall around italy!

What a deeply unpleasant comment. Disgusting attitude.

  2. Yup, complete denial, until bodies start piling up.

  3. From a racing perspective, other teams will continue their development while Ferrari will not. I don’t think that is fair, given this is out of Ferrari’s control. FIA should shut everyone down or provide some other fair guidelines.
Last thing we need in another year of Merc 2 secs a lap faster than anyone else.
