The organisers of the Hungarian Grand Prix say concerns expressed over the restrictions which will be imposed in order to comply with Covid-19 restrictions are “unfounded”.
Paddock members from outside the European Union and European Economic Area, including those from Britain, will be confined to the race venue and hotel accommodation during the weekend in line with local restrictions. Those caught breaking the rules face a fine or even imprisonment, as some reports highlighted. However the race organisers today stated the race “complies with the regulations of the FIA Covid-19 Code of Conduct, which fully reflects the pandemic measures of Hungary currently in force”, and claimed the restrictions are no different to those being applied at other rounds.
“Since respecting the regulations of the FIA Covid-19 Code of Conduct apply for all attendees for the purpose of successfully staging the Formula 1 world championship, not only in Hungary, but in all other countries visited by the Formula 1 family as well, any concerns emerged in the past few days regarding the sanctions in Hungary are fully unfounded,” the statement continued.
“Notwithstanding, the current pandemic situation presents huge challenges for everyone, it is a great pleasure for Hungary to host the Formula 1 world championship and its participants, similarly to the previous 34 years, and the organisers do their best to stage the 35th Magyar Nagydij [Hungarian Grand Prix] on their traditionally high level of standard.”
Yesterday British drivers Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris said they have no concerns about how the restrictions would affect them.

Good news, so no 3rd race at Red Bull Ring. For the sake of variation, nice to have a different track next.

…but the UK isn’t, for legal purposes, outside of the EEA until the implementation period ends on the 31st December 2020! I mean, not that anybody is likely to be bothered to challenge this sort of thing (and it’s not like EU states weren’t imposing quarantines on each other which obviously broke EU law and were equally obviously perfectly sensible a few months ago), but would you stop pretending you’re following the letter of the law when you’re not?

The UK is in the “transition period” where the UK and the EU are fully aligned and therefore, while actually outside the EEA are treated just the same as those within the EEA.
It’s a bit of a mess and tricky to understand to be fair…
