Max Verstappen made an extra pit stop with three laps to go in an effort to claim the bonus point for fastest lap of the race.

But despite being told the lap time he had to beat – a 1’05.619 set by Carlos Sainz Jnr – and having a quicker car beneath him, plus a set of soft tyres, he ended up half a second shy of the target, and not happy about it.

Verstappen second pit stop dropped him into a group of lapped cars. Although he made his way through them easily thanks to the blue flags, he inevitably lost some time in their slipstream through the quicker corners. “I mean, what’s the point to pit when I’m in traffic?” was his first comment to the team immediately after taking the chequered flag in third place.

While Lewis Hamilton only had the third-quickest lap time of the race behind Sainz and Verstappen, but he clearly had the fastest package beneath him and was able to take it easy as he headed to the chequered flag.

After the race Christian Horner drew attention to the fact Sergio Perez’s Racing Point had been quicker than the Mercedes at some stages. That was undoubtedly true, and Renault clearly have plenty to say about their suspicions concerning the those two teams.

Despite his late-race drama, Perez easily gained the most places, rising 11 places from 17th to sixth by the flag. Had he been a little more patient with Alexander Albon, he might well have made it to fourth, though whether he gets to keep his eventual finishing position is now in the stewards’ hands.

  1. If I’m reading the graphs correctly then it looks like Lando was as fast as Hamilton for his 2nd stint. Impressive but seems like the McClaren likes a lighter fuel load. You can definitely feel in the race that there are some drivers who get into a rhythm better than their team mates in the second half of the race, but perhaps this is just a querk of the Alpha Tauri Ring.

    1. @millionus Alpha Tauri Ring, LOL.

    2. @millionus You’re missing the fact that Lando pitted 12 laps later, stint length much shorter so he could push a lot more.

      1. @ivan-vinitskyy Good point. I knew there was a reason why I don’t work for an F1 team :)

  2. Can I just say how much I LOVE this feature? I’m sure it probably doesn’t get the same kinda traffic that a “Mercedes accuses Verstappen of Murdering a Cow!!” type of headline gets, but it’s absolutely one of the reasons I keep coming back here.

    1. Verstappen murdered a Cow!! Vegans unite!

      /s

    2. @knewman Thanks very much James!

  3. It is funny how may are assuming Mercedes were slow, and that suddenly everybody was faster then them in the second half of the race.

Look. They Mercedes were faster by a mile. They were in front and just didn’t need to stress the car any more, that they needed.
What is the benefit in finishing with 30+ seconds margin, but with concerns about the car? No point.

  4. That McLaren is quite impressive at certain points during the race.
Sainz kept Verstappen more than honest during the initial laps, and he beat him by 0.5s chasing the FLAP.
Also Norris had a good couple of laps towards the end both weekends.

  5. I’m struggling to understand ricciardo’s strategy, surely he needed to go much longer on his stint on the medium tyres? Both perez and norris went longer on the soft. Was the medium just not a great tyre? He had good pace on it early on.

    1. @frood19 I think that since the soft was holding on quite well they thought it was a good tyre to go to the end from that point. Plus, if he’d stayed out longer he would have likely lost track position to Sainz and Perez who were quite close to his window.

      1. @coldfly Yeah but I’m curious where Sainz’s pace went on the second stint. He didn’t seem happy on the medium compound – his laptimes were quite a bit off what Norris was doing which ultimately dropped him from a potential P5 all the way to P9. Given that he got fastest lap by a good margin, albeit on a brand new soft, it doesn’t look like there was any problem with the car.

      2. @keithedin yes, I guess hindsight is a wonderful thing with these strategies. It strikes me that they went a bit too conservative, given that track position was not as important as it is on some tracks. he could have given up track position and then had an advantage at the end. bottas had a 10 (?) lap tyre advantage over verstappen and breezed past. though admittedly he also had a mercedes.

  6. Looks like Verstappen picked up his damage on lap 50, you can see he gets progressively slower after that whilst Bottas gets quicker.
