Magnussen given two penalty points for “aggressive” clash with Latifi

Kevin Magnussen has been given two penalty points on his licence for his incident with Nicholas Latifi at Stowe during today’s race.

The stewards ruled Magnussen rejoined the track “aggressively” after running wide, making contact with the Williams driver as he did.

After reviewing data from video and onboard cameras, the stewards handed Magnussen a five-second time penalty during the race.

“Latifi was making a pass on the inside of Magnussen at turn 15,” the stewards noted.

“The stewards determined that at the exit of the corner, Magnussen left the track unnecessarily and then re-joined the track aggressively, striking Latifi’s car. Compounding this the stewards felt that by leaving the track Magnussen was able to maintain his position.”

Magnussen now has a total of three penalty points for the current 12-month period.

  1. Shouldn’t they alter the 12-month period (for penalty points leading to a race ban) a bit, seeing as we’ve seen no racing for four months.

    1. It could possibly come back to haunt drivers next year with a very tight schedule this year, so I think it’s fine. The other option is to tie it to a set number of races, but the calendar shrinks and grows every year so that might not always be fair either.

  2. Looked like Bumper Cars on TV

  3. How Magnussen is continuing to runaway with his hideous driving is just beyond me. He should have been black flagged, a 5s penalty is a yoke.
He will never learn and in the meantime somebody can get hurt badly. What the FIA are waiting to suspend his license for a race or two without having to go through the penalty points system ?

    1. Just keep in mind that everyone drives like this…

  4. He wants to play bumper cars or something.

KMag and Romain are like the tag team that never wins or has an interesting storyline. I think a shake up might do Haas some good at this point

    1. I couldn’t agree more, although I think we’ll be lucky to see Haas stay full stop.

  6. He should’ve just let him by immediately. What’s the point in not doing that after a clear-cut off-track pass or a pass aided by an off-track excursion?

    1. @jerejj probably the hope that he would only get a time penalty and that he might be able to build a 5 second gap that would allow him to keep that place.

  7. Too right. The guy is such a menace – and now he’s usually in P20 there is the added aggression that comes from frustration.

  8. Haas should get rid of Steiner as well as its drivers. Not sure but Steiner has a nack for finding absolute worst drivers.

Looking at past similar incidents with KMag, it seems he has a habit of running wide and then not having full control as he oscillates over the kerbs. A lepoard does not change it spots.
So Alex Albon was right last week !
As I have argued on these Racefan chatboards and other places, KMag’s re-entry last week, the British GP, was not a fully controlled re-entry and his collision with Albon was not a racing incident nor was it something for which Albon should have received a penalty.

    1. He did not leave the track last time. A lot drivers do these kind of manoeuvres. What about Ocon weaving in front of Russel during qualifying?

The Latifi incident was wrongful of kmag but please consider the fact, that most Kmag races are somewhat anonymous because of the slow car.

It seems like you’ve decided to dislike the guy despite all the drivers races like this.
