Kart racer Luca Corberi, who gained notoriety when he was seen attacking a rival at the FIA KZ Karting World Championship Final last October, will face an FIA International Tribunal over his behaviour later this month.

Prominent racers including world champion Jenson Button called for the 23-year-old to be banned after the attack which took place at the South Garda Karting circuit in Lonato owned by the Corberi family.

The FIA confirmed the tribunal will consider two charges against Corneri: That “he threw the front fairing of his kart to the track while other drivers were still competing” and “physically attacked another driver.” Corberi directed his anger at rival Paolo Ippolito following a collision between the pair.

The tribunal will begin at 9:30am on March 22nd and will take place via videoconference.

Former Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa, now the president of the international karting commission of the FIA, said those involved in the incident would “face the consequences”. Current F1 racers Max Verstappen, George Russell and Lance Stroll also criticised his actions last year.

Corberi apologised for the incident and said he intended to retire from motor racing.

“There are no excuses to explain why I’ve done such a disgraceful act,” said Corberi. “This has been something I’ve never done in my 15 years of career, and I really hope it won’t be seen by anybody else in the future.”

  1. About five months after the incident.

  2. One or two year ban could have been enough. I’m still not convinced about a lifetime ban.

    1. I feel it’s gonna be lifetime ban on first instance, and 2-3 years on appeal. Remember Flavio – he got lifetime ban for crashgate, and later it was subtly revoked.

  3. He must be planning to race again.

  4. He should quit immediately.
