  1. At the time of my comment we don’t know if Leclerc will get a gearbox penalty or not, but if he will, he and Verstappen will have cancelled out taking each other’s pole positions after the 2019 Mexican GP (remember how insistent Max was after that that he got pole?) as pole positions are based on starting from first, not on winning qualifying.

    1. Indeed @hunocsi, similar to Schumacher’s Mercedes pole lap. Hard to say what will happen, but Verstappen crashed in almost identical manner in 2018 and ended up with gearbox damage and a penalty.

    2. Good observation there @hunocsi! Yeah, it would rather surprise me if the Ferrari gearbox survived that clash.

  2. Disappointing qualifying for Perez. Vettel was a surprise.

I sure hope we’ll see some overtakes tomorrow, or I’m thinking the predictions for this week will not give a lot of points to anyone. Not that I wouldn’t mind Gasly to get P6 and Hamilton P7, but still.

  4. Gasly, Vettel, Norris and surprisingly Mazepin were the drivers of the day for me. Perez and Hamilton both dreadful.

    1. I’d add Giovinazzi to that first list, great effort from his as well to get his Alfa into the Top-10.

      1. Indeed, great point @srga91

    2. Perez was in line for a lap that would have gotten him about the range of Bottas’ lap until he came up on a mighty traffic jam towards the end though. Agree with you on Giovinazzi @srga91

      1. True @bascb, but he shouldn’t have to rely on the final lap, he should have banked a quicker one in the first part of Q3 if that car had such pace.

        1. Yes, that is certainly the sensible approach @john-h, and not managing that is clearly a solid indication that he is not there where he surely wants to be or the team needs him to be. But since he did look like he could get there (in contrast with Hamilton who never even looked close to the pace in the first place) I do see a huge gap between deeming Hamilton’s effort “dreadful” and doing so for Perez.

  5. Kudos to Gasly for a third row qualy, in front of one of the Mercedes and one of the RedBull.
Also, I’m starting to get worried about Riccardo, who is one of my favourite drivers of the season.

  6. So thus far, of the big names that have moved into new teams, Vettel is actually doing better than the others in relation to his teammate, which is quite a surprise to me.

Did Perez & Ricciardo just not turn up? Like for Ricciardo being so far away from Norris is bad, but Perez being beaten by both Ferraris, a McLaren and an AlphaTauri really isn’t good at all. Red Bull really needed him to at least punish Hamilton a little more and outqualify him.

    1. @rocketpanda Perez run through traffic at Rascasse. Though I must concur he’s having a poor weekend so far. With Hamilton’s abysmal time, he should be there in front of him at the very least. Keep this way and Marko is gonna snap soon.

  8. What a weekend so far!
Leclerc, Norris, Gasly and Sainz with great form.

Given Bottas’ time, I wonder had Hamilton been on form this weekend if he could get pole. 2nd row at minimum he’d get.

Shame for Sainz under Red Flags.

This whole new-car-at-new-team reality is hurting some big players. I’d say Dannyric is getting the worst of it, since his car is solid good. The rest is excused, though if Vettel lost to Stroll today, he’d be better pack up and leave.

  9. What happened to Sainz’s final sector during his first run in Q3?! He was even slightly up on Charles, coming into the final sector and then lost 0.3 there.

  10. I thought I had written Seb off, but somehow it feels like a victory to see him comfortably outqualify Stroll for once. Haha

    1. @d0senbrot he did well for much of the last race. I feel like he’ll be almost back to old form by the end of the year. Something is happening for him at Aston Martin and so far it’s been good.
