Soft tyre degradation creates racing in F1 no matter how much the drivers and traditionalists complain about it.

I have to agree. As long as Pirelli (or anyone else who wants to try) can make the tyres safe, then I’m happy with them.

I’d much rather they give the drivers proper racing tires that allow them to push harder for longer, That don’t overheat after a few laps of been pushed, That don’t have to be babied, That don’t have to be prepared so much resulting in a mess in qualifying & that don’t have dumb tiny working operating windows.
Artificially created degredation creates racing that is as fake & unsatisfying as the Dumb Racing System that creates boringly easy push of a button highway passing. We want to see real racing, Hard Racing with drivers able to race rather than getting highway passed with the artificial flappy wing or because of the awful comedy cheese tires that leave drivers defenceless and creates just as much boring highway passing as the flappy dumb racing system.
This past decade of formula Pirelli comedy cheese tires have been the worst in the history of the sport.

Have to agree, I much prefer races with multiple stops. As long as they drop off consistently I like the softer tyres.

Thank you @roger-ayles, I’m loosing heart (and interest), unfortunately hardly any of the fans nowadays have ever seen a race long battle for the lead uninterrupted by pit stops.

A better race than the previous one, but again we didn’t have any battle for the lead. A 7/10 as the battles at the midfield were really good.

7. Brilliant moves from everyone at the start and end but not the best in the middle. Lost one point for the ridiculous penalties for when they were just racing.

Honest question, don’t you think the penalties were justified? Why should anyone be allowed to push another driver off track when they’re more than halfway alongside?
OOliver
4th July 2021, 16:14
You do realise that on some of those corners, you can not change your line once you have committed else you still cause an accident.
I don’t understand why a driver will throw his car round the outside of a corner when he has no chance. The FIA is rewarding stupidity.
Baleux (@baleux)
4th July 2021, 16:45
Every other race series and even F1 has had races where drivers have overtaken on the outside of those specific turns. It should never be acceptable to push another driver off track. Harder and fairer racing is produced when all drivers involved have enough space.
All three F3 races this weekend were excellent, thanks in no small part to the multiple overtakes through the insides and outsides of T3 and T4.

Really enjoyed this one. Lando was incredible today. Max is well and truly living up to the potential he’d shown over the years. He sure seems to be ironing out the errors, showing great consistency and making the most of a consistently competitive car. Was there anyone out there who didn’t get a penalty today…? Fernando showed his experience by thinking better of going around the outside with a 50/50 move. A 5 second penalty for your competitor is little consolation for a trip through the gravel.

Absolutely great norris (and mclaren), think they were lapped the other time, and this time they were in fight with mercedes, even when you include verstappen didn’t have to make a 2nd stop that’s still nowhere the gap as the other race.

7 for me… exciting race with lots of action, a great result for Max – and for Bottas & Lando… As for penalties,
I can’t understand why the inital penalty agains Lando was awarded to Perez (sure it will be explained in due course) and why on earth Perez then went on to the exactly the same thing… :-)

Another case of the over-regulation with these dumb anti-racing penalties which sapped a lot of the interest out of the race for me as it’s clear between those, the Dumb Racing System & comedy cheese tires that F1 isn’t about pure racing anymore because the drivers aren’t even able to race anymore.
4/10.

What a fantastic race, as usual. Some brilliant overtaking, with Norris on Hamilton and Leclerc on Perez the two best. The Red Bull Ring is absolutely one of the most exciting tracks on the calendar if you’re looking for good racing.
However, the penalties were a bit of an issue. My view is that Norris on Perez was definitely a racing incident, as was Perez on Leclerc the final time. The only one that should have been penalised in my view is the first incident between Perez and Leclerc.
Baleux (@baleux)
4th July 2021, 16:11
Last week’s race was rather mundane, no?
I’ll concede that in F1 there seems to be a precedent that the driver ahead at the exit of a turn is entitled to the racing line. However, I fail to see why such a precedent should’ve been set in the first place, since the racing line can be followed to a reasonable extent without having to push another driver off track. How do two drivers battle for more than a few seconds if they’re not allowed space on track?
OOliver
4th July 2021, 16:18
If you look at those corners when they drivers tried to go round the outside, there was already an established racing line that takes the driver to the very edge of the track and you can’t change your line mid corner.
Perez trying to go round the outside of Lando was stupid and Leclerc trying to go twice round the outside was also stupid and the Stewards appear to now lack common sense.

4th July 2021, 16:24
The stewards don’t just look at it the way you apparently do.
They take attitude and reaction into account, among other things. Did the car on the inside try to avoid contact or attempt to leave a car width for the car on the outside? Deliberately driving an opponent right off the track shouldn’t be accepted, and today they didn’t accept it.

7. That was weird. The first 20 lap was excinting, yawn 30 lap except the Perez-Leclerc collisions and a good ending with insane fight between Russell and Alonso. DRS still necessary because the overtaking still difficult(example: Bottas-Norris, Ricciardo-Leclerc, Raikkönen-Russell, ect.). Tsunoda and Perez made two same mistake.

4th July 2021, 16:12
7 – Way better than last week.
Penalties helped make it – they put some faster cars back in the pack after they did the wrong thing.
Everyone driving around without rules or jeopardy would be worthless – as has been proven in F1 too many times.
MaddMe (@)
4th July 2021, 16:43
Given the coverage, I gave it an 8/10 and ignoring the the stewards decisions.
Lando on Perez at T4 was a racing incident – no penalty deserved
Checo on LeClerc at T4 also a racing incident – no penalty deserved
Checo on Leclerc at T4 – the gap was always going to disappear, racing incident.
Given the ingnoring that Leclerc (Not Gasly) moved and burst the rear tyre of Gasly’s car in the last race, I cannot ignore Ferrari International Assistance. Whilst I could give maybe one of the penalties (and I really can’t) Perez did not deserve both of the penalties issued and once again, the stewards are attempting to mess with the racing.

Suppose an 8, mercedes in trouble, plenty of battles but not for the lead, however for as high as 2nd place with norris vs perez early on, then vs hamilton, then catching up with bottas again, and ofc in the midfield with ferraris coming up again, alonso vs russel really good for these times with drs often ruining fights, ricciardo finally performing better, although not still at the potential of the car, and plenty more.

A decent race from second back but we were robbed of a battle for second by a ridiculous penalty, with at least one equally bad stewarding decision later on, probably based on the brand new precedent they set earlier in the race. That soured the race a good bit so I dropped it from a 7 to a 5.

7/10 for me.
A quite interesting race. Not much excitement at the front after the early laps but plenty of fighting for places up and down the field. Like most people I disagree with some of the penalties. The stewards were way to keen to hand them out today. It’s supposed to be a sport, not a demonstration event.
