  1. Nice “podium”, well deserved.
Good to see a bottas victory.

  2. Not a goat start from the goat

  3. Hamilton and Perez both lost out, although the biggest loser is Gasly.

    1. Which is a shame cause he had got ahead of hamilton, unfortunately that very slight touch with the mclaren ruined his wing.

And let’s just say he’s been far more convincing than perez this year, although at red bull drivers seem to do worse.

  4. I think that’s game set and match for the championship. Lewis only has himself to blame.

    1. Everything will depend on the races in Mexico, Brasil and the US. If they are all ran Max has a god chance.. if they are cancelled Lewis might luck his way to #8

      1. @w0o0dy this is correct

  5. Bottas is driving for Bottas now, I doubt Hamilton can rely him tomorrow.

    1. You know he’s starting from the back?

  6. Well, that was a nightmare for Hamilton. I don’t see him winning the championship tbh. He should’ve capitalised on this moment. I hope he’ll be able to bounce back.

Red Bull looks stronger in the race than they did in qualifying. McLaren’s speed is awesome and Ferrari did a decent job as well, especially considering the horrible weekend they’ve had so far.

    Loving the Sprint-format btw! :-)

    1. @rogerzzz

Mercedes must be kicking themselves how they lost this opportunity, with such strong qualifying. Giving Bottas a new ICE here was a horrible decision in hindsight.

      1. @aapje I mean, hindsight. This was unpredictable. It was the smart decision.

        1. Questionable. This is a track where Mercedes was expected to do well, so there was a better chance for Bottas to take points off Max here than in a track where Mercedes is weaker.

          1. Agree it was questionable, it’s very obvious cause I liked it yesterday when I heard bottas was gonna start from the back and I’m 100% anti-mercedes, so I knew it was the wrong decision, obviously couldn’t expect hamilton’s mistake but it still leaves him alone.

Having said this, bottas felt like he had good chances of winning the actual race, so I’m sorry that he probably lost his last chance on a race win due to a PU change.

      2. Do they have to decide up front if they will switch PU? Or could they have decided this after the sprint race?

        1. I believe they saw something suspect in the data in FP1 and didn’t have time to check if it would be ok to run so decided to just bite the bullet and replace the PU here since it would have to happen at some point down the line anyway. But otherwise you would be allowed to decide to change the PU after Sprint Qualifying since they were discussing that option for Verstappen before the race.

          1. @keithedin They said the change was for strategic reasons, not because of any issue.

I guess Bottas’ now infamous ‘FU to whom it may concern’ could have manifested itself here at the start after getting fired and stepped on for so long, plus they think he will anyway come through the field.

  7. Mercedes’ strategic new engine looks quite a stupid idea right now.

    1. The thing is, I don’t see how people didn’t see it yesterday, leaving hamilton alone at the front on a track where they could get a 1-2?

  8. That medal made them look like third-rate rappers.

    1. So cheesy. Not as bad ceremony as last time though.

  9. Great result for Max this.

  10. Cheer up Merc!! tomorrow will be worse

  11. Hamilton seems to be putting in a 2016-level performance, some good races but some really off moments too (Monaco being an utterly terrible race weekend from him) including a few bad starts. Verstappen meanwhile is metronomically consistent this season and easily deserving his first championship so far. Bottas looks relieved/inspired by the move away from Mercedes and the prospect of a new start where he’ll probably be the top driver. Actually good to see. The real buzz though was Norris’s start, wickedly brave and helped both himself and Ricciardo by shutting out Hamilton for the rest of the race.

Still it’s a whole new race tomorrow.

  12. So techinally that was the first time Russell didn’t outqualify his teammate..

    1. @qeki He was outqualified in Sakhir last year. But in Williams, yes, it’s the first time.

      1. Yes, still wouldn’t count it against him for that record ofc, he is always fastest in quali, he’s known for bad starts.

  13. Lewis lost the championship, for sure. It seems that these “great” racers such as Vettel and Hamilton can only win when they have the best car out there and no competition. Once there’s some serious competition, they lose.

    1. He’s absolutely not deserving of the title so far, that’s for sure, but not sure how you can say he lost it when they’re so close and verstappen basically made no mistakes so far and lost so many points through bad luck.

  14. The time deltas you’ve used on the grid are incorrect… they map to the finishing positions of the Sprint, but overlook the fact that Bottas has been booted to the back. Gasly is listed as finishing one second behind Schumacher, rather than 18 laps.
