Mercedes has confirmed it will launch its new car for the 2022 Formula 1 season on February 18th, one month from today.

The car will be officially designated the Mercedes-AMG F1 W13 E Performance. It will be raced by Lewis Hamilton and new team mate George Russell, who has joined the team from Williams for the 2022 season in place of Valtteri Bottas.

The team confirmed it will hold a virtual launch for the car including both its drivers. Hamilton has not spoken publicly since the controversial end to the 2021 season in Abu Dhabi one month ago, where he lost the championship to Max Verstappen on the final lap. Mercedes won the constructors title for the eighth year in a row last season.

Mercedes is the fourth team to confirm its launch plans. The team follows Aston Martin, which will be first to launch on February 10th, McLaren the day after, and Ferrari on the 17th.

Pre-season testing will begin at the Circuit de Catalunya on February 23rd.

  1. I like how they add ‘Performance’ to the name, to distinguish it from the ‘Economy’ edition.

    1. In the absence of emojis, I’m going old school… ROFL!

      1. If you google for a specific emoji, or use a site like Emojipedia you can copy and paste it generally 🏎️

    2. Rumour has it that the Racing Point RP20 was developed under the name ‘Mercedes AMG F1 W10 Economy’… :P

  2. Thought they would have delayed it post FIA report given Lewis’ current low profile since it will turn into a circus around his issue with the FIA.

    1. The fia report only publishes just before the start of the testing.
So at that time the cars should be ready and Hamilton should be on his normal place.

    2. Everyone that matters already knows what the report is going to say, this is all just for show

    3. Toto can scream what he wants, it will only make the FIA more stubborn. Some team principles seem to have forgotten who organises this competition and seriously overestimate their power. F1 will be fine without Mercedes and without Lewis. Wouldn’t want to see it personally, since they do add something. But Toto is seriously victim of his own overestimation and the more he shouts the bigger the need to put him back in his place. If anything needs to be fixed and should be the outcome of any investigation it is that Toto (and Horner) overplayed their cards and teams should not be allowed anymore to influence the competition in the way they have in the past. The only sensible outcome and solution is to strip them of their influence.

  3. Noted Mercedes Live launch – in Australia we are banned from F1 live and our F1 coverage us Sky Sports ti Australia Foxtel who limit what we can see due to TV rights – so will it be on Youtube or what for people oversea whose countries are banned

  4. I doubt any team will be showing it’s “real” car during their launches prior to the start of testing this year but more just a nicely done livery on a mock up.

None of the big teams will be wanting to give anything away until they actually break cover on the track.

Gone are the days when something radical (walrus nose etc) appear at a launch.
