Smart move by Max, only a single yellow, so fair play. What an interrupted session, though.

Yeah looked fair enough to me, he really did lift and not get on the throttle again till well past the incident.

Great job by Verstappen, well-worthy of pole.
Carlos Sainz, ouch. Just no need.

What a fantastic, mixed-up grid!
…is what I’d be saying if they weren’t all going to sort themselves out in the sprint race tomorrow anyway.

Sainz ”bins” it again, another lost chance to be at the front with LEC (all over VER). The good part this time is that there’s a Sprint Race and he has the chance to recover places and start the long race from a better position. In the meantime, K-Mag saves his car again and continues. Starting to think Ferrari signed the wrong driver to replace VET.

The performance of Hamilton and Mercedes is interesting. My cynical side can’t help but recall all the comments over the last 8 years about how his victories were not down to the car…hmm. But putting that aside there are other more interesting points.
Here he is in a frankly disappointing vehicle and he is really struggling. He almost seems to have given up today, and was comprehensively beaten by Russell.
Some drivers are much better than others at getting the most out of below par cars. Others just struggle. I’m thinking of Vettel for example – compare 2013 to 2014 when he was also trashed by his teammate.
But some great drivers do amazing things with average cars – Alonso, Bianchi, Perez (almost happier in a bad car). Others just struggle. Hamilton is amazing in an amazing car but I can’t see this year going well for him.

The last time Hamilton dragged a bad car was 2009 – but that was 13(!) years ago. Does he still have it in him?
Also, in fact in 2013 when Merc last made a non-championship contenting car, it was Rosberg who scored more wins (2 vs 1) than Lewis while suffering more reliability issues.
So it’s time for Hamilton to show he can do it again after all these years.

I wouldn’t read too much into a qualifying session like that where they’ve had no time to dial in the car this weekend either. The gap to Russell is too big but we have no idea what setup compromises may have been made by either. The car looks absolutely awful so I’m pretty sure Hamilton is more concerned about fixing it’s pace issues for the long term than looking at his performances with much criticism at present. Fair play to Russell though as he’s doing a great job. If he’s still outperforming Hamilton at the end of the season that’ll be what matters.
There is 2 races this weekend with points for both, I wouldn’t be surprised if Mercedes have given up all their single lap pace over to gain race pace (possibly full dry lower downforce setup) as ultimately that’s what will score them points. I’m sure some teams will have gambled on a slightly wet compromised setup for qualifying. We’ll of course see if that’s the case though tomorrow.

Absolutely frustrating how long it takes to choose to set a red.
