  1. Any Lewis fans who think this was unfair should have a chat with Bottas.

Entertaining race in more ways than one.

    1. Didn’t remember seeing Bottas getting punted by Pastor Magnuson.

      1. Do remember seeing Bottas leaving space for everyone, and not making contact at any point.

        1. I think RBR might doubt that claim.

          1. In this race?
Maybe I fell asleep at that moment.

I recall him keeping tight to allow Verstappen space around the outside at turn 12, even though it isn’t really an overtaking spot.

    2. I don’t recall Bottas being ordered aside so early in the season when he was the one with the better chance of overtaking someone.

    3. @nullapax Come on, that was always at least halfway into a season when Bottas winning the WDC was out of the question. And Mercedes were always ‘apologetic.’ This was early still. But OK, I get that they want all the points possible for their only realistic contender. Perez isn’t good enough to challenge Ferrari and Leclerc. In fact he’s there at Red Bull precisely because he isn’t good enough. But even so, Max made the mistake, spinning off and losing positions. It wasn’t a bad pit stop or other extraneous factor that put him ‘out of position.’ So I think he should have been made to earn the win by passing Perez in a straight fight at least. But that’s not the Red Bull way.

      1. Yes, was a questionable call, but remember ricciardo and verstappen in baku 2018? It’s not about earning the place, it’s about risking to throw away a 1-2, which, although it happened twice in few races now, hadn’t happened for 5,5 years before.

Was a shame we lost Leclerc and Hamilton got shafted, but otherwise an interesting race.
Had Hamilton survived the start those mediums could have changed the pitstop strats for others. Really impressed with Red Bull and how they dug Max out of being stuck, great teamwork to get the 1-2 there.
Cracking drives throughout the field, Russel holding firm, Max pumping in those fast laps, Norris surging into the points despite being ill, Alonso savaging something also.
How Hamilton almost ended 4th I’ll never know, poor by Sainz today.

    1. I was really intrigued by the tyre choice for Lewis at the start and hoped for an interesting strategy.
Then he got hit and he sounded like he wanted to call it off.
Then he got back into “I am a racing driver” mode and just earned his money.

      1. Yeah, if they are calling the harder tire they need some way to get those up to tempurature and fast.

Does anyone know if the Merc still has that magic button to transfer break temps into the tires? I think the harder tires is what did for Hamilton, he got caught by those running on the faster tires.

  3. I think if Lewis had stayed P5 after the first lap he would have been fighting for the win. That’s a serious comeback statement . He was clearly the fastest driver on the mediums.

He was 60 secs down after lap 1 and was 40 seconds behind VES before he had to slow down.

    1. Mercedes will be winning races soon and Once the car gets suited to Ham he will be fight for poles / wins. Merc may have cracked the code

    2. How suited? Russell and Hamilton are probably the closest pairing on the grid. There was a tenth between them in the qualifying and race pace is comparable too I think. Hamilton had a decent strategy bar the first lap, Verstappen spun off and lost loads of time stuck behind Russell due to the faulty DRS. That is how the gap went down, not due to an actual pace advantage

      1. If HAM nails the car, Mercedes move forward. That’s how its goes unfortunately, Ham when him and car is matched, he is 2 tenths faster than RUS both in Q and race trim.

        1. Wishful thinking.
How is he going to be that much faster than Russell? Russell is known as a pretty good qualifier, I consider it to be quite an achievement for the boomer Hamilton to be on equal terms with him in the qualifying battle with only a tenth between them in normal circumstances.
Russell is a future star, being on similar terms with him is pretty good for Hamilton. So was only losing the championship last year due to the gimmick. His consistency which dates back pretty much to 2011 is otherwordly.
But how exactly is he going to get 2 tenths on Russell during the races? Russell could find the time you speak off as well.

        2. he is 2 tenths faster than RUS both in Q and race trim

How did you arrive at this?

      2. Agreed they are currently very close, though I think it’s been clear that Lewis has struggled more than George to adapt to the car when its been at its most difficult. I also think we’ve seen the first signs today that as the car improves and Merc get it more into the optimal window, Lewis is beginning to be able to get back to the limit.

And that’s when we’ll really learn how good George Russell is.

        1. Well, I think, although hamilton’s recovery was impressive, russell showed again how good he is by his red bull battle.

      3. Hamilton and Russell were clearly running different set up. Russell for qualification, Hamilton for race pace and tire degredation. In Qualifying Hamilton didn’t have enough rare grip, whilst Russell may have had too much down force slowing him slightly in race setup.

They know what their doing, even if we don’t.

    3. That’s wishful thinking. The best he could have done was maybe beat Perez.

Mercedes have moved their luck to the other side of the garage this year

    1. Hamilton was unreal today. I also hope you guys know Max has a lapdog and has since ricciardo. Perez going to pitwall to celebrate that is laughable

That’s just what the best teams do. Same situation as Mercedes for years. Now that they’ve brought in the guy who will be Lewis’ replacement, it suddenly is a lot closer.

    2. I would say Russell has already had about a full season worth of Hamilton’s luck with five races in a row that transpired favourably for him.

      1. Don’t forget the “having a good car” luck, which is what hamilton excelled with mostly, since he hasn’t always been lucky with reliability or VSC\sc.

  5. Shameful way to win, taking the top step, this boy is absolutely devoid of any shame or guilt. No morality from the RB camp YET AGAIN. Feel sorry for Checo, when will he ever be allowed to win on his own terms?

    1. Baku is not that far away

    2. I agree with u fully. Redbull ahould have allowed them to race. That was a disgrace. And a shame. And a robbery for the fans.

    3. Red Bull’s never had any form of morality, this shouldn’t really surprise people.

      1. Oh come on. How was this not logical? And how fast have some forgotten years and years of perfect wingman Bottas?

Red Bull split strategies and constructed a 1-2 with their top driver winning, second driver taking the fastest lap and taking the lead in both championships. Hard to argue with results.

From the day Checo actually looks like the fastest driver that can mount the best fight for the championship, they’ll let him. And if anyone thinks I’m joking: Vettel was ordered aside for Ricciardo during the fourth race of the season.

        1. I’m seeing lots of arguments like this – that it’s ok because other teams have done it. Yet some of those presenting it used to harangue those same teams. Funny world this.

        2. It’s rare a team uses orders like this so early in the season, we’re barely a quarter of the way through it.

        3. Yes, if a driver is slower, they will order him to let his team mate by, no matter who it is or who’s number 1, the thing is on balance perez has no chance to be faster than verstappen, definitely was a questionable call but also risky to let them race in the circumstances.

  6. While i understand also why lewis wanted to retire the car that was an amazing comeback in not the fastest or best car. Even overtaking sainz fair and square. Only to have an issue in d last few laps. Mercedes russel and lewis are going to be contenders come 2 to 3 races time. They will now begin to unlock the cars potential performance.

    1. While i understand also why lewis wanted to retire the car that was an amazing comeback in not the fastest or best car.

That’s not a contradiction, yet I agree he drove an amazing race once he pulled himself together and got on with it.

    2. Yes, was a good race, he surprised me too, was thinking he could only get points, he was unlucky at the start, since he was probably too cautious with sainz early on and that ended up with him being hit by magnussen.

  7. Driver of the day?

    1. GEORGE!!!

    2. Although, I could say LEWIS as well. It was a great comeback!
