Relief for Gasly as he avoids another penalty point after stewards investigation

Pierre Gasly has avoided moving closer to an automatic race ban following a stewards’ investigation.

The AlphaTauri driver went into this weekend’s race with 10 penalty points on his licence. He will receive an automatic one-race ban if he collects two more.

He appeared to be at risk of that when the stewards announced he was under investigation for driving unnecessarily slowly during a reconnaissance lap before the start of today’s sprint race.

In order to prevent drivers lapping too slowly and potentially presenting a hazard to others, they are given a maximum time to pass between the two Safety Car lines either side of the pit lane. This was set at one minute and 12 seconds for this weekend, but Gasly recorded a time of 1’14.185 ahead of the sprint race.

After speaking to Gasly and a representative of his AlphaTauri teams, the stewards decided to issue him a formal warning. Crucially, this does not include any penalty points.

The stewards accepted that Gasly had slowed due to people on the grid near the first Safety Car line. “The stewards took into account that there were people on the grid just after SC Line One,” they noted, “however the driver is responsible for driving the required speed during the entire lap.”

Gasly will have at least 10 points on his licence until next year’s Monaco Grand Prix. He said earlier this week he is discussing the situation with the FIA as he feels the threat of a ban is “harsh”.

  1. Didn’t Tsunoda get pretty harsly penalized for this earlier this year? Or was it last year already.

Again, the stewards show they hesitate to penalise drivers with points when they know it could put them out of the car for a race.

    1. @bascb Do you mean in Australia? Tsunoda got a reprimand there for being too slow in qualifying, but not a penalty point. He did gather enough reprimands to get a grid penalty, which Red Bull cynically avoided by changing his engine at the same event.

      1. No, I guess it was last year in Austria then Michael N.

    2. I suspect steards are not in favor of GAsly’s tactics of forcing the ban on this season and not risking the ban on his 2023 team.
I think he did something silly on Friday’s quali also.

  2. Relief & luck

  3. Gasly wants the ban. Give it to him please
