Alfa Romeo has presented its new Formula 1 car for the 2023 season.

The team revealed its new C43 chassis in a specification which is understood to be close to that which will run when pre-season testing begins at Bahrain International Circuit in two weeks’ time.

The Sauber-run team heads into the new season carrying the branding of Alfa Romeo for the final time having agreed a deal to rebrand as Audi in 2026.

The team produced its most competitive performance for years in 2022. They rose to sixth in the constructors championship, their highest finishing position in a decade.

However much of that success was achieved as a result of their strong start to the season. Their points-scoring tailed off sharply in the second half of the year, allowing Aston Martin to draw level on points with them at the final race, Alfa Romeo only outranking them in the final classification by dint of having a higher finish in an individual race.

The driver who produced that result, Valtteri Bottas, will remain at the team for a second season, as does Zhou Guanyu following a debut season which showed more promise than points.

Two major changes in the team’s management have taken place during the off-season. Andreas Seidl has arrived from McLaren as Group CEO, while Alessandro Alunni Bravi has been designated the team’s representative.

“Our new car is the results of months of work, but today is just the beginning of a journey,” said Bravi. “We need to keep working hard, with humility and dedication, to bring performance to the track. Everyone in the team is committed to this target and we are confident we will reap the rewards of our work.”

  1. Looks great, but it’s got some Ferrari vibes!

    1. Yeah! Rear wing is incredible, from behind. I hope it performs this year. It’s the first car launch I’ve watched live and they didn’t really seem all that excited about their prospects. I hope I’m wrong. I don’t really have a favourite team but if I had to pick, I’d pick Alfa!

    2. Aside from being red, I see more Red Bull than Ferrari. But I’m sure the chassis design pros will have a full analysis soon enough.

  2. That’s a lot of bare carbon for a team that prided itself on being the only ones below the weight limit a year ago.

    1. They’ve learnt from their mistakes then…

  3. The commentators are gonna have fun identifying this and the Ferrari from the front facing cameras. And if the Alpine livery is the same blue they will also have fun with that and the Williams.

    1. I’ve been saying for some time that FIA needs a director of photography.
Some cars in most condition – sunnny, cloudy, rainy – are impossible to distringuish, particularly when the camera position does provide for good contrast/light.

  4. More bare carbon. I think the teams should get a weight allocation added to the minimum weight so they can paint the car. If they choose not to paint the car they can add it as ballast – preferably to the roll hoop. That’ll get the paint gun out.

  5. Red and black work together but livery could have made better. Looks like a baby ferrari

  6. Cool livery & better than in the last seasons, & I notice that they’ve changed their steering wheel design from the slightly round-ish shape to a more squared one similar to Mercedes.

  7. the front wing seems to be inspired by the idea of Mercedes’s front wing that has been banned

  8. The white bits were a mess, just like on the Ferraris, so this’ll look better especially if it’s a deep, sparkly red.
Should be easy to tell them apart – the Ferraris will be the ones near the front…
I’ll miss last year’s 20s-style Alfa logo (that’s 1920s!) but they never settled on an identity, which kind of sums up their time with Sauber

    Faux-rarri…

    1. If anything, it’s a Faux-di.

  10. Hah, they took the sidepods from Ferrari.

It looks like it’s becoming a (boring) standard for many teams in terms of livery on the nose just being a colour stripe on top of it. Eh…

    1. Hah, they took the sidepods from Ferrari.

Err … no? That’s a version of the sidepod ramp design that Red Bull was successful with last season.

      1. I meant specifically the front of the sidepods – the air inlets are Ferrari’s, and the top surface is a bit concave along Ferrari’s design as well.

        1. Ah, okay, thanks for the clarification! 👍

  11. Those wing mirrors look mahooosive.

  12. Nice looking car and all, but the real news here is Valtteri’s magnificent mullet.

    1. but how much does it weigh?

  13. Now that’s how you do it. Wow.

I hope the paint weight savings gives us some more black and less white all over the place like this. Looks so good.

  14. And *still* that cursed rollover blade design will not die. So far it’s been used once, and it’s failed that once, in Zhou’s crash last year. I appreciate that the safety test’s static load has been increased for this season, but a crash instead involves dynamic impacts, and a rollover blade is not as efficient a structure at transferring dynamic loads as a rollover hoop.

It’s also disappointing to see that the new rules on the mirrors have not moved them inboard, to be more within the driver’s peripheral vision. So the driver still has to turn their head to see behind them. I guess the teams construed to prevent the new rules agreed from affecting the mirror’s primary function of downforce generation.

  15. Hah! An actual car presentation and not just a livery slapped on the old or mock-up model. Interesting to see the sidepod design, seems to be more the Red Bull direction adjusted to suit the Ferrari engine. Makes me curious what direction the other Ferrari teams will go and what Mercedes has done! Nice livery by the way, Haas should take notice..

  16. Great livery, and an actual car! Hope it’s fast!

  17. The floor looks interesting

    1. The floor looks fake. I don’t expect to see them to even test it. Does look cool though.

  18. Its so pretty!!! Just like a glossy ferrari :-) it will be so hard to differentiate between ferrari and alpha on TV, especially in night races tho
