We actually attended this race all weekend and our experience was great. The drive down was really nice. Only 4.5 hours and 110kmh straight shot all the way from Seoul. Our motel was only 10 minutes from the track opposite of all the heavy main traffic and I’m sure there were still empty rooms through the whole weekend. Parking at the track was spacious and “free” in that parking permits were supposedly required but never checked. We always arrived early and parked right in front of the gate. Completely stress-free weekend!
We arrived Thursday and promptly headed to the track to spy out what we could see. There were workers still setting up and finishing up the construction of bits and pieces. We strolled up to the paddock in hopes of seeing some drivers but apparently they have security for that sort of behavior and they wouldn’t let us in without a pass. I passed by Nick Heidfeld but couldn’t think of his name at that moment so I didn’t call out to him to get a pic because I felt awkward. We explored all of the main grandstands and even went up into the press box. We could see across into the pit lane into the different team garages. We saw Alonso riding his bike around the track and we saw Schumacher walking the track too with Ross Brawn. Caught a glimpse of Vettel, Hamilton, and Button. Cameramen followed the drivers everywhere.
Friday we were allowed again into the main grandstand with our ticket and we watched the practice sessions from this vantage point. It was unbelievably loud. Earplugs were a necessity. We managed to sneak up into the “Gold” section even though we didn’t have tickets for that area. It was shaded by the large overhang and offered a comfortable view.
Saturday we went to where our actual grandstands were over by turns 9-10. It was a tricky section of track for the drivers even in the dry. We saw Kubica almost slide into the wall in front of us.
Sunday was cold and rainy as you probably saw on TV. It wasn’t that it was raining hard, just that it never stopped sprinkling from the night before so the track could never dry out. We were sitting in the very top left corner of the grandstand facing the section between turns 9-10 as if you were facing the stands. You could probably see me standing there if you were able to slow down the footage enough. It really did get quite dark at the end of the race. On TV the cameras amplified all the ambient light but in reality the sun was set already. Lucky they finished when they did.
For me it was awesome, not so much for the racing but just seeing all the cars in real life. Even though you can only see the top of the drivers helmet as they fly by, it is amazing to be able to see all the drivers and cars that you admire so much in action. It was almost surreal.
