Olivier Grouillard

A late 1980s Formula 3000 perennial, much was expected of the talented Frenchman Olivier Grouillard in Formula One, entering with Ligier in 1989. Some strong early performances in adverse conditions highlighted his obvious ability. However, the car was junk, as Olivier tactfully stated mid-season effectively severing his working relationship with the team.

This was to become an oft repeated theme during his career as he managed to similarly upset Osella and AGS. It was not until 1992 that Grouillard finally got another chance with a car that stood any opportunity of qualifying on a regular basis when he partnered Andrea de Cesaris at Tyrrell. A return to the glory days of Jackie Stewart and Francois Cevert this was not, as both crashed with alarming regularity. By now the Formula One paddock was tiring of Grouillard’s outspoken antics and notorious blocking and it was no surprise when he left the team at the end of the year.
