Perry McCarthy

Perry McCarthy (pictured centre between Mark Blundell and Allan McNish) earned his Formula 1 chance the hard way, and was ill-rewarded for his efforts.

He gamely battled his way to an F1 drive with Andrea Moda in 1992, one of the most infamous and short-lived of teams in the sport. Having spent several rounds unable to drive in practice due to lack of funds, he got a run in his home race at Silverstone – albeit on wet tyres during dry practice.

At Spa-Francorchamps he was sent out with a broken steering column. The team folded when owner Andrea Sasseti was arrested and McCarthy moved on to a successful sports car career.

He later appeared on BBC TV’s Top Gear as The Stig.
