If there’s only 22 cars on the grid, should fewer cars advance into Q2?

Nowadays, there’s 7 cars dropping out after Q1 and another 7 after Q2, but if HRT aren’t there next year, it will be 5 and 7. Wouldn’t it make sense to change that to 6 and 6?

I think it could make Q1 more interesting, because then there would be a higher chance of a contender dropping out early on.

I can’t remember off the top of my head, but it’ll probably revert back to how it was in 2006/7, whatever that system was.

    It will go back to 6 & 6 :)

    Wasn’t it 5-5 in 2008 and 2009? Surely it’ll be 6-6 then.

It was 6 & 6 back in 2006-07, and 5 & 5 back in 2008-09. So yes, it would even out and go back to the 2006-07 system. An equal number of cars are always eliminated in Q1 and Q2.

The Sporting Regulations already provide for this.

33.1 (c) …if 22 cars are entered only six cars will be excluded after Q1 and Q2.

Maybe that’s the one good thing that will come about with a reduced grid – more pressure on drivers to make the Q1 cut-off.

That said, with 24 cars on the grid, I’ve often felt that knocking out eight drivers in Q1, eight drivers in Q2 and leaving the top eight to fight for pole in Q3 would be best.
