Last weekend over 200 American football players out of the 1,696 in the league took part in protests during pre-game performances of the US national anthem. The protests began last year when Colin Kaepernick sat down during a pre-game rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner in protest at civil rights abuses against black people in America.

The widespread protests last weekend came despite Donald Trump, the US president, urging the NFL to sack players who took part in them.

He has found more support in NASCAR, which raced at the New Hampshire oval last night. Multiple champion Richard Petty backed Trump’s stance, saying he would fire anyone from his team who took part in the protest. Other team owners including Richard Childress made similar remarks.

F1 will visit the USA for the 17th round of the season on October 22nd.
