Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap of the Singapore Grand Prix with three laps to go as the track dried out.
His lap of 1’45.008 is a new lap record for this configuration of the Singapore circuit. It was just over two seconds quicker than the best time seen during last year’s race.
However earlier in the weekend the all-time track record had been lowered by three seconds. It indicates that the track never got back to its best during the race, and also that Hamilton’s Mercedes wasn’t necessarily the quickest car on the day.
But he was still running, which was more than could be said of three of the drivers whose cars were potentially quicker than his. The fourth, which belonged to Daniel Ricciardo, suffered a gearbox problem which he had to nurse to the end of the race. Even so he lapped within three-tenths of Hamilton’s pace, and quicker than the other Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas.
